Regarding “enabling” others in their behavior, when it hurts you–is it sacrificial love or not–keep in mind that if that person is sinning (by abusing, drinking, cheating, whatever), that hurts his or her OWN soul. Sometimes the loving thing might be to stop enabling, and leave, just because you are an occasion of sin for that person. In other words, it is a sin to beat someone, so don’t let the person commit that sin with you! Now, with St. Monica, at the time she lived, she may not have had many options. I think a lot of women have just had to make the best of a bad situation. But it’s not like that now, fortunately.
About intercessory prayer for “enemies” or difficult people we just don’t like and have a hard time wishing them well–I have found that novenas are really good for this. Get a saint to help you! Get them on the case! St. Rita helped me to pray for a neighbor I didn’t much like, once. (Hmm…she had a bad husband, too)
