  1. file type ??

    what’s a m4a ?

  2. m4a is an audio file. I don’t know why this series is not distributed as mp3-files…

Why is that so? My MP3-Player can’t play m4a, sadly a reason not to listen to this show :-( but I would love to…

  3. Thank you for your question.

An m4a is basically an an advanced mp3. It is commonly called an “mp4″ though the file type doesn’t read that way. I have published my podcasts this way in order to create what is called an “enhanced podcast” where still images can be viewed along with the audio. It is compatible with Quicktime 7 and iTunes.

Try a direct download and see if you can view it through your web browser.

If you want it on your portable player, but it is incompatible with mp4’s, then do the following to convert it to an mp3 and then import it to your player:
    1. Subscribe to the feed using iTunes
    2. Go to your “Prefereces” in iTunes and select “Importing”
    3. Select MP3 Encoder in the popdown menu under “Import Using:”
    4. Then select “OK”
    5. Now right-click (control-click for the Mac) the file in question in iTunes and select “Convert Selection to MP3″ which will make a duplicate of the file, while stripping the images off.

Fr. Roderick and I have talked about making the files available as mp3’s, but are concerned that having duplicate entries would confuse users.

    Hope this helps.

  4. I agree – there are a few podcasts that use this format – e.g. Cardinal Arinze’s podcast – that I can’t listen to. I-tunes apparently handles this, but for the rest of us who use windows and an mp3 player, we’re left out. Using a restrictive file type is a sure way to limit your number of listeners.

  5. I second that.

I know of several ways to convert m4a into mp3 and I’ve done it successfully. There are several freeware tools out there that do this for you (if you don’t want to use iTunes).

However it’s too cumbersome to everytime start this routine in order to be able to listen to this podcast. I even have a piece of software on my PDA (Palm TX) that plays m4a files (and shows the embedded pictures) but since I’m typically listening to podcasts when I’m driving I will not look at them anyway.

So I’m supporting the idea of making this podcast available in mp3 as well.

    Just my 2c.

  6. Thanks for your input. I will work on getting the files converted for you and upload them as soon as I can. I won’t be able to upload them all at once due to monthly storage limits created by libsyn.

    -Fr. Bill

  7. Okay, okay. I upgraded the storage limit and have uploaded all four episodes as MP3’s as well. They aren’t yet added to the Da Vinci Cast feed, but should be as soon as Fr. Roderick gets a chance.

Another option is to subscribe to the St. Anthony’s Podcast. Know that by going that route, you will be getting the feed which includes my homilies as well as the Da Vinci Code stuff.

“Ask and you shall receive.” But, don’t ask too much as I have a limited bank account ya know!

    Pax,

  8. Thanks a lot Father!!!

Really look forward to hearing the podcasts.
