  1. Poor Fr. Roderick, I’m so sorry that your kidney stone is acting up again. I will be sure to say an extra prayer for you….
As for beds, from what I have learned, the supporting ability of a mattress is dependent on the number of coils/springs inside of it. It’s not directly related to the hardness and the softness. A mattress can feel soft simply by a thick layer uphostery at the top, and yet it can still be supportive in the mean time because of the high coil count at the bottom. So, if you’re shopping for a new mattress, just ask the salesperson about the coil count.
Finally, if you podcast a lot, no one will suspect that you’re sleeping all day long. :) God bless,
    Jack

  3. Fr. Roderick,

I’m sorry to hear about your kidney stones. My husband, father, and brother have all shared your misery. With regard to matresses - my sister is a police officer, which means that she changes work shifts every three months. This means that her sleep patterns are irregular and a good mattress is a must. She bought a mattress that is sold in the US under the brand name Tempur-Pedic. She swears by it. I believe that the technology was developed in Sweden. It is a foam that, as it is warmed by the body, forms to the body, providing support. When I was pregnant and having backaches due to a daily 60 mile commute, the doctor suggested that I get a lumbar support pillow. I purchased one made from the same material that the matress is made and it is fantastic. I’ve been using it for 7 years and it is perfect. That’s the upside of these mattresses - they last a long time. The down side is that they can be expensive - about US$700 for a twin and US$1000 for a double. On a geeky note - this product was developed from NASA technology and so it sports a NASA Certified Space Technology seal.

On a different note altogether, I was thrilled to hear that Peter Jackson bought the rights to the Temeraire series. The first three books are His Majesty’s Dragon, Throne of Jade, and Black Powder War. Naomi Novik is very much still around. She is a new writer. Her first book is His Majesty’s Dragon. She had a rather unique deal with her publisher in that His Majesty’s Dragon was published early this year. One month later Throne of Jade was published and one month following that the third book was released. I loved this series and now my son, Sam, who is 12 and a pretty advanced reader, is starting the series. It will make a fantastic series of films. I can already envision the special effects. What really works, though, is that at its heart these books are about duty, loyalty, and honor. They require the protagonist to reevaluate the way he views his entire world and to decide how willing he is to do what is right rather than what is easy. I can’t wait until these films are made. They will be just about my favorite type of movie - subversive popcorn movies. By that I mean movies that are fun to watch and that, on the surface, are engaging, sometimes humorous, and often times heart-pounding, but that contain within them, hidden under the flash and fancy, surprisingly compelling messages - the Star Wars films are great examples of this type of film.

For anyone interested in finding out more about Naomi Novik and her work, her web page is:

I hope you feel better soon.

  4. Dear Father,

The Zune player will play podcast and can be plugged to the X-Box to stream music, video and pictures via USB cable. It also has a built-in FM transmitter which the iPod lacks.

Check out this Zune blog by a Microsoft staff who is part of the Zune project:-

  5. Hi
    Re Mattress
When we last look i did not think that here in the UK the Ikea products were well made.
I agree as above the coil number is the main criteria.
as we have a double bed, myself and my wife have different requirements we found a local mattress maker who made us 2 single mattresses to fit the double bed.
I would suggest looking for a local maker the cost was not anymore than a good quality off the shelf in our case.

  6. Dear Fr. Roderick,
I want to echo what Karen mentions in the comment. IKEA mattresses aren’t well made. Please don’t buy it there. What my wife and I did was to buy only the bed frame from IKEA, and then we bought the mattress from a local store.
    Jack

  7. Where is the paypal button for the Father Roderick Mattress Fund ? :).
