Fr. Roderick,
I love your show and what you’re doing with podcasting. And yet, I am given to deleting your most recent shows. The episodes are too long and ponderous. I don’t get a sense of any editing. I’m aware of Pascal’s remark; “I would have made this letter shorter if I had more time.” Could you tighten it a bit? Max your show length at 30 minutes?
OK now I have a problem.
2 new podcasts on one day. I recently got a new phone which includes a MP3player but the memory is limited so I cannot put 2 episodes on it at once.
I know it’s my problem and a luxury problem. but anyway first come, first serve so CI-77 it is. But happy to see that you are so busy with SQPN father.
by the way did you change the dutch podcast it’s name? Have you been forced by the golden arches?
Kyle, nobody forces you to listen to the whole thing. But many listeners told me to do the show at my own pace, and that is what I do. I don’t want the show to be rushed. Some people want shows to be only 20 minutes or 15 minutes long. Others can’t get enough of it. You don’t like the songs I play at the start of the show, many others do!
The beauty of podcasting is: you decide what you listen to. I do my show in my way and at my pace, and in turn you can delete, skip, fast forward or unsubscribe whenever you feel the urge! But please allow me to do things my way
hear hear to that Fr. Roderick.
I am not interesterd a bit in the songs you put in your program. So that means that I have to push one button not more than three times to have me skip that part and very much enjoy the rest. No big deal!
A suggestion for Kyle would be to listen to the podcast in two installments.
Hi! Love your show! I particularly liked the thought of the day by Shaw and of course the Swedish music you have played in a couple of recent episodes (I am Swedish). Keep on podcasting!
I hope you don’t read this as “negative” criticism, but as “constructive” criticism. First of all, I realize that there is a lot more going on in you life than podscasting, but I would like to see more consistency, that is, having the daily breakfast be just that… “daily”. Now, until you have all your production helpers etc. into place, that won’t always be possible, but (and I think that you ARE looking to do this) when you are sick, or aren’t able to get to the task, is there some way of having a “guest host” (it would not be the same without you, however) or 30 minutes of your favorite podsafe music, or…???
Again, I realize that this is probably your goal too, but I wanted to put my 2 cents (or my 0.02 Euros). I check my feeds 2-3 times a day to see if another DB has been posted… consistency…
One last thing (totally unrelated). Don’t “talk” to audio feedback as though the person is there with you… Sorry… just my pet peeve!!
Thanks Fr. R. for all you do, and especially thanks for your prayers for all of “us” while you were in Rome.
Thanks for your input.
Dear Fr. Roderick,
I found the discussion quite geeky and it definitely deserved a jingle!
A greeting from Taiwan!
Father, I know that you are constantly experimenting new ways of communicating. In the process of trying out new formats, there will invariably be some people who don’t like any given one. Please do not be bogged down by the negative feedbacks. I really appreciate your efforts. For example, I appreciate that you recorded three or four daily breakfast episodes in a row before you left for Rome. That was just great of you. How many podcasters can do that for his/her audiences? I also appreciate your efforts of putting Catholic Insider into seasons and remastering the old episodes.
Speaking about Catholic Insider. You talked about the problem of converting minidisk sound files into a coherent audio clip. I think you ignore one thing: the Geek segment jingle!!
Thanks for all you have done for us and God bless.
Jack
I know this is strange feedback for you, but I was very impressed with the wintery SQPN banner. You did a nice job with it Father. I actually design websites for a living so let me know if you even want me to create a bunch of them for you. Glad to help any way I can to give the site a fresh look from time to time.
On the cappucino issue (may have been the last episode), you mentioned that real cappucino starts with regular coffee and then adds steamed milk. That is not quite correct. It starts with espresso, not regular drip coffee. If you don’t have espresso, you don’t have a cappucino, no matter what else you add to it. From what I understand, the Senseo is a hybrid type of machine which does apply some of the water pressure necessary for espresso, so it is better than regular drip coffee for cappucino, but not quite the same.
The next most important factor to a good cappucino (and any espresso drink), is to have fresh ground beans. The coffee experts will tell you that buying a decent grinder (not the whirlybird type) is more important than even the espresso machine.
@Vance: espresso is regular coffee to me
Drip coffee only has a vague resemblance to real coffee
Well, Fr. Roderick, different people have different tastes, to be sure; de gustibus non est disputantem as the old Roman saying goes, but I went to Happy Feet fully expecting to enjoy it. I went to see it with my mom, three of my brothers and their available spouses, and some nephews and a niece (none of them particularly young). We ended up scattered around the theater in small groups.
About midway through the movie, I realized much to my surprise that not only wasn’t I enjoying it, but I was beginning to dislike it. The only characters I found in the least sympathetic were the short penguin “dudes” who to Mumbles in after he got lost, and but for them, I would have been cheering for the leopard seal. I thought the music selection was mediocre; it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t inspired. For instance, the music for the pairing-off scenes, which should have been happy or exciting or light, all seemed to be (at best) tinged with dark overtones or undercurrents. The anti-religious was clearly there, though it wasn’t a constant theme. When the church came into view, it made me think of Cruella de Ville’s mansion (though I could be confusing that with something else, it’s been a while) or the churchyard in Fantasia before the bells began to ring; it seemed dark and ominous.
So when the movie ended, I figured that that was me, and the others would tell me how silly I was being, but to my surprise, they didn’t. The children had little to say about it one way or the other, and the adults all disliked it to a significant degree. Even those who usually like the sort of music in the movie (as I’ve written before, it’s not my preferred music) didn’t care for the selections made and said much better choices could have been made.
Ah, well.
And I can assure you that drip coffee is real coffee, unless it’s made from chicory, of course. It’s just not what you’re used to. That old Roman saying above runs both ways, don’t you know.
Yes, all your points are legitimate and I know I’m being a noodge. Of course I can’t strip you of your free will, either. So please consider this for what it is: friendly feedback. I didn’t want to but I will be unsubscribing but I wish all your endeavors all the best.
Hi everybody…
I was reading all this feddback and came to my mind this, from an anonymous author:
“THE PRIEST IS ALWAYS WRONG”
The Priest is always Wrong! Because…
If he is preaching longer than twenty minutes,
he makes the people stay away from the church;
If he preaches less than ten minutes,
he did not prepare his sermon!
If his voice is strong during the sermon,
he is shouting;
If his voice has the normal strength,
people do not understand what he is preaching about;
If he owns a car,
he is worldly;
If he does not own one,
he does not go with the times.
If he goes visit families,
he is never at home;
If he does not visit them,
he does not care for his Parishioners.
If he is asking for contributions,
he is after money;
If he does not do it,
he is too proud for that.
If he takes his time in the confessional,
he is too slow;
If he makes it faster,
he has no time for his penitents.
If he begins his Mass on time,
his watch is advance;
If he begins a minute or two later,
he keeps the people waiting.
If he renovates his church,
he throws away the money;
If he does not do it,
he allows everything to rot away.
If he is young,
he has no experience;
If he is old,
he should retire.
As long as he lives,
there are always people who know better;
IF HE DIES,
THERE IS NOBODY TO TAKE HIS PLACE!!!
God Bless you.
Fr. Javier Cosentino
Thanks Fr Javier for those words. They made me laugh but I also see how true they are. During situations like these, I often remember the section from the Pieta prayer book on priests:
Our Lord’s revelations to Mutter Vogel:
“One should NEVER attack a priest, even when he’s in error, rather one should pray and do penance that I’ll grant him My grace again. He alone fully represents Me, even when he doesn’t live after My example!”
“Whoever voices judgment over a priest has voiced it over Me.”
“Never again accept an out-of-the-way word about a Priest, and speak no unkind word (about them) EVEN IF IT WERE TRUE! Every Priest is My Vicar and My heart will be sickened and insulted because of it! If you hear a judgment (against a Priest) pray a Hail Mary.”
Fr Roderick, thanks so much for all that you have done for us, the listeners of SQPN. I pray that God continues to bless your work and make it bear much fruit.
I got the feeling to comment again. as said I chose to listen to CI-77 first so I have not yet listened to DB206. But I got the feeling to comment again. due to all the feedback above.
Some is negative some is meant coinstructive. but I can understand that you can use some encouragement aswell.
so that’s what I wanted to do by posting this comment. You got a very creative spirit so keep using it.
God Bless
(hmm that still sound better in english)
Father Roderick,
My two cents.
Do your show however you want to do it to your heart’s desire. The Daily Breakfast will only shine if you invest your enthusiasm and passion into it, and that means creating it however you want to.
Keep up the great show. I’ll be listening to it if it’s 20 or 40 or 60 minutes.
Pax et bonum
