Father,
this is phantastic !
You are doing such a great job as “SQPN roaming catholic reporter” - pls. continue to put out video-clips like that.

Excellent work Fr. Bill - I especially like your postediting work - it flows with the excitement of the expo (POV of being there!).
Were you able to see any 320X240 videocasts on the AppleTV presentations? wondered how they filled the screen.
Tonight I purchased an A/V cable to connect my new iPod to my TV.
How exciting it was for me to see the Catholic Minute vodcast for the first time on my own television!
You did an very superb job with the episode, Fr. Bill.
Indeed, this is going to be a very promising year for SQPN.
Dorothy,
Thanks for the kudos. I’ve done a lot of music videos for our youth group. It’s fun. It’s a hobby. I must admit that the editing takes the longest time. As a pastor, I don’t have much time to do it anymore. As for these episodes, it has been rather frustrating to use the internet connection here at my hotel where I’m staying. It is veerryy sslooow! Upload, go to bed, and hope it finished okay.
I didn’t recall seeing any 320X240 video podcasts from the Apple TV on any of the larger screens at the expo. The iTunes store, and subsequently much of the video being shown, was likely the 640X480-ish format. It looked pretty good, though none of it was as good as DVD quality. You may have noticed the one video podcast shown (National Geographic). It was better than first gen. video podcasts, but again, it was akin to common non-HD resolution (above). It’s all a good first step.
When 802.11-n get’s finalized, I bet that Apple will update all their new hardware and we’ll be seeing 720p (1280X720) and maybe even 1080p (1920X1080) HD content. Exciting!
-Fr. Bill
Fr Bill’s Catholic Minutes have been much appreciated! A great start to SQPN’s “video year”.
Fr. Bill, I haven’t seen this covered elsewhere so I’ll ask you. On the AppleTV box, does it have the capability to play from iMovie files? I’d really like the ability to play homemovies without having to burn to DVD. Second, when streaming from one of the 5 connected computers, does the AppleTV “pull” the content from the Mac? In other words, can you start an iTunes song from the AppleTV remote or do you need to get up and go to the Mac?
Thanks for the reports Fr. Bill.
Cames,
I saw nothing that would indicate that one could immediately serve up iMovie work files. I am lead to believe that they must be exported as a completed video format such as mpg or mov. Unfortunately, the icon on the Apple TV from Movies uses an icon that looks similar to iMovie. The tech specs actually refer to H.264 which is a pretty hefty format to crunch through to play well. But, nobody mentioned iMovie documents nor did I see such files demoed.
The Apple TV will stream as well as sync to the main computer (dunno if the new airport base station will be required) that talks to the Apple TV. That means you can have content on either the AppleTV or your main computer. All other computers on the network stream content only. From the AppleTV one can select any computer on the closed wireless network to stream its content. I wonder what will happen if the selected networked computer is asleep. Then, I think one may have to get up and wake up the computer.
I’m no Apple rep. so these are what I understand. I have Elgato’s eyeTV hardware and software. I wonder how these will interact or will they conflict on the network. Elgato coudln’t answer that question when asked at the Expo. It’s just too early to know.
Hope this helps some.
Fr. Bill, much appreciated. I had the sense that iMovie was un-streamable, which is too bad. To me, that seems like a weak point in an otherwise very nice product.
Where do we get our own sqpn t-shirts? You guys should set up a merchandise store to fund things. I would be the first one buying.
