Very cool! Well done and thanks for allowing us into your very exciting life.
Very colorful! Why didn’t you wear a costume yourself?
Awesome! I wish there were festivities like that where I live. I am very glad that you shared that with us. It was wonderful.

Hi Fr Roderick, thanks for posting your carnival impressions here. Here in south Germany we have a very long carnival tradition but we call it FASNET season and it’s quite different from the big parades in Cologne, Mainz etc. Here you wear very old (wooden) masks, costumes etc. Some Fasnet guilds have very long ropes with a nylon ribbon at the end (KARBATSCHE). It’s very hard to explain what they do with it. They move the bullwhip-like rope first in one direction and then they quickly turn their body and move the rope to the other direction. If you do that fast enough the nylon ribbon breaks the sonic barrier and produces a big bang. Now you do that for a minute or so and you’re totally exhausted… It’s really a common carnival sound in our region every local person knows. If you can’t imagine go over to http://www.narren-spiegel.de/Grafiken/rzell02_6.JPG and have a look. Also have a look on the old Hänsele- costumes: http://www.narren-spiegel.de/Grafiken/haensele4.JPG
If you still can’t imagine you should consider to come to Lake Constance next year to celebrate Swabian-Allemanian Fasnet with us
Other traditions are for example that our carpenter guild mounts a big decorated Fasnet tree (= “Narrenbaum”) (abt. 25m high) in the village. That’s a symbol for Fasnet in south Germany (especially in Baden Württemberg). Maybe next year I have a video camera and I can share some impressions with you because it’s hard to describe and I guess a lot of people can’t imagine.
BTW at the end of Fasnet season (yes people actually say it’s our “fifth season”) we BURY Fasnet or carnival if you like. We typically do that the day before ash wednesday. All are dressed up in black (but with decoration) and then the carpenters cut down the Narrenbaum (tree). Then the tree is either sold by auction or is put into a lottery.
People here are really venerating old traditions….
Next sunday all collected Christmas trees will be burned on a big fire with a witch puppet on the top. We call it “Funken” and this is closely related to the end of carnival. The puppet has nothing to do with witch hunting, pagan magic things etc. as some might assume. Actually I don’t know the real symbolism behind the puppet. Symbolism of the hole fire is the wish for winter to end and springtime to come.
OMG Father………
I can not believe you were in my city at the best time of the year and I didn’t know about it!!!!! You cannot imagine my surprise when I saw the catholic insider downloading with “Sittard” in the title!!!
You made an absolute awesome video of the carnaval! You even showed one of the big cars that I worked on!! :)Hope you had a great time in Sittard! It actually is a great place to visit for one of your soundseeing tours, because we have so many churches and so much history here! I could be your tourguide!
Ow, and just for the record, after the parade people don’t all go home… they go to the bars to celebrate for three days in a row!!!
Bye!

Hi Father Roderick!
Thanks for sharing your visit to Sittard. The carnival was amazing! Here in Halifax, it’s rather low-key; just pancake suppers on the eve of Ash Wednesday
YouTube link above takes you to CI show link WKCtAIGGSj4 (Where is King Kong).
Hey, let’s get this to grow at digg and YouTube with comments and links!
Peace on this day of fasting, almsgiving and prayer…
O.K. what a really really cool video! I’m loving these new directions that SQPN are taking and I feel like I’m right there! Thanks Father Roderick for an awesome video and look forward to many more!
Peace…..
Wonderful stuff, Father! I really like this!
I loved the video!
Father, thanks for letting us peek in and get a taste of Carnival in the Netherlands.
