I would have thought that if you were replacing the network, you’d have gone with one gig throughout. But it was encouraging to see that Firefox icon on your desktop.

Inspired by your example, I have removed an old (but not that old) hub from my home computer network. It had been redundant for several months, but I hadn’t bothered to deal with it.

I completely agree with erwin weird place just a small lesson on bits & bytes.

when talking about staorage we talk about Bytes and write a capital B like in a 200GB harddisk. When we talk about speed we talk in bits. to be more precise bits per second. like your orange 20mbps connection. (one byte is 8 bits).

Yes, everything is CAT5 now. The reason they placed the switch outside was that before I came to live in the house, they had 4 students that rented the place. Each of them had a room on the street side of the house, so it was easier to put all the cables outside. The hub was probably already second hand when they installed it.

What an ODD place to put a switch… Now, are you sure all the UTP cabling is CAT5? Otherwise, you could still experience slowdowns (and there wasn’t any CAT5 in 1991!)
