  1. Regarding the download problems, I rarely have them when I download podcast episodes for the first time, but when the Internet connection failes, or my computer crashes (and lately it crashed a lot beacause there’s a preoblem with the power supply unit), I usually can’t download them again, even if I unsubscribe and subscribe. But today I discovered that when you start downloading an episode, iTunes creates a “Downloads” folder along the “Podcasts” folder present in the “iTunes music folder location” indicated in the menu Edit/Preferences/Advanced. In this new “Downlods” folder, there’s another folder with the name of the podcast whose download wasn’t completed with two files about the episode. I just deleted this “Downloads” folder, and was able to download the episode again. Perhaps this may help someone.

  2. If you want the best of Linux and a media center, you might want to look into http://linuxmce.com they have a demo video and it looks pretty cool. As for podcasting the a very promising looking solution is Ubuntu Studio http://ubuntustudio.org but the site says it’s supposed to be out in April but here it is May and nothing yet. Another thing is Kubuntu http://kubuntu.org and that is the Ubuntu core but uses the KDE desktop enviornment, which looks a lot nicer compared to the Gnome interface in my opinion.

I’ll take my Mac over Linux any day of the week but linux is the best option on generic x86 hardware.

  3. Fr. Roderick,

I have found tow tools which should work to record podcasts. One is Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/?lang=nl) and the other is Jokosher (http://www.jokosher.org/).

For listening to your podcast I use gPodder (http://gpodder.berlios.de/) as aggregator. I does not has the best UI, but it works without problems and I can use it to copy the podcasts to my iPod.

I with you a lot of fun with ubuntu.
    Regards,
    Martin

  4. Two things… First, as I was listening, I thought to myself, “He sounds tired” and then you said… “I’m tired”… ESP I guess.

Second, I saw this on Internet Scout today:
    http://www.podloadr.com/

It is a utility to load things on to your I-Pod. I don’t have an I-pod, so I’m not sure how useful this may be.

  5. I’m running Ubuntu for two years now and I’m completely converted to it. Someone suggested to use audacity. I can’t recommend that.

But you can run Adobe Audition in Linux if you’re using a virtual machine that emulates Windows. There are several virtual machines available like vmware.

Wine is also an emulator, but I think Audition is too complicated to run in it.

  6. You and I must be listening to a lot of the same podcasts. I also got the idea to try out Ubuntu from Leo Laporte - I took an ancient relic of a pc, 10 years old, and installed the ‘lite’ version, called xubuntu on it, for fun. It’s a pretty great little OS! I’m actually posting this message using it right now.

  7. Fr. Roderick, please skip doing a show, if you are tired. It is ok!

It was the same with me like it was with Michael. First I thought, “man, he is tired or he is lacking of energy”. And then you did say, what I was thinking… But the street organ seemed to be able to get you back in the mood :)
    Have a nice weekend!

  8. Your Dutch for beginners are getting more and more fun for each episode, Father! I am very happy to be able to learn a little Dutch, I love languages.

I have never tried Ubuntu, but I am running Gentoo on my 2nd computer. Gentoo is like Ubuntu, a Linux distribution. I am still quite new on Gentoo and Linux in general, so I am trying to be able to get it to work with my existing network. Good luck with your Ubuntu, Father!
