I have seen game addiction it keeps up up late. I ti snot on line gaming, but it does exist. It is worse than TV in some ways because of the “just one more” puzzle, town, clue, whatever and it stimulates the brain and is especially be before bed.
I knew a woman who was married to someone who was addicted to online gaming. His unwillingness to deal with his addiction led to their divorce. He neglected work and family and lost both. She was working, going to school, and taking care of their children. He left everything for her to deal with. He refused to go to counseling. He refused to quit playing. He left, moved back home to his parents, and provided no support for his children. Once he moved he stopped having contact with his kids. He just wouldn’t talk with them even though she begged him to. She was left with the debt that he had incurred before he left and the need to help the kids cope. It was so sad to see her go through this.
Having seen this, do I consider online multiplayer gaming evil? No. I think that this person would have found something, be it alcohol or drugs, to engage in addictive behavior with if there wasn’t the online game that he became involved in. From things that were said, I believe that he used the game environment as a way to escape responsibilities that he found stressful and overwhelming…and then he left.
I’m wondering what Brazillian listeners, Fr. Roderick, and other listeners think of the Pope’s controversial statements in Brazil: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070514/wl_nm/pope_brazil_indians_dc
I -a Brazilian listener- just read something about it on the Catholic League site. I haven’t read anything yet on the Brazilian press.
Father,
Since your listener feedback line is in the U.S. the format for the numbers is 1-206-202-4455 or just (206)202-4455 because everyone in the U.S. knows you have to dial “1″ first on a long distance call. At any rate the last four numbers are grouped together.
Could we have a skype id that we could call and leave feedback too aswell please? I’m happy to call a skype id and leave a message, but I’d rather not call internationally.
As I only started to listen to the podcasts on SQPN a couple of weeks ago I have some catching up to do. I have to say the shows are addictive and as I am listing on my computer I play games in the mean time, addictive aswell. Last night for instant I listen to 3 episodes of LOTR and 6 on Pirates. I had to drag myself to bed at 3,30 a.m. Knowing my weakness, I have never gambled (for money)just to make sure I won’t go bankrupt. Probably best not to try multilayer games either ;-).
Fr Roderick, keep up the good work and hopefully you make many more (addictive) shows.
