Fr. Roderick and all,
I really appreciate the discussion about Starbucks. I think it’s a good example of how difficult it can be to apply Catholic values to our everyday activities.
I think that saying things, like one contributor to the podcast did, that Starbucks contributes $$$ to NAMBLA, should really be backed up with written evidence. I can find nothing on the Internet.
Father, I really have to object to a comment made by a caller to your show today, who claimed that Starbucks supports NAMBLA. You may not be aware of what this organization represents but you can find out by doing a Google search. Let us just say that it is quite reprehensible, to the point where it might be considered libelous to claim that Starbucks provides it with financial support. I challenge the caller to give evidence for this poisonous claim.
I agree. Claims like these should be backed up by proof, and I invite the caller (who called in on the listener feedback line), to tell us if this is just a rumor or if there is a solid basis for these allegations. Like Pat and Roger, I haven’t been able to find anything on the internet about this. I have removed the passage from the episode.
+ starbucks update/clarification
+ vocation story
- listener comment that Starbucks donates to a pedophile “charity”; probably had a bigger “shock effect” than was realized, and was most likely inaccurate
Regarding Starbucks support of PP:
“Starbucks spokeswoman Lara Wyss said decisions about sponsoring gay-pride events and other causes are made at the store or regional level, not the corporate level. And while Starbucks matches employee contributions to charities such as Planned Parenthood, Wyss said, it doesn’t make outright corporate contributions to such groups.”
- taken from this Seattle Times article: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002455480_starbucks29m.html
Additionally, regarding “The Way I See It” quotes on Starbucks coffeecups:
The Way I See It #92
“You are not an accident. Your parents may not have planned you, but God did. He wanted you alive and created you for a purpose. Focusing on yourself will never reveal your purpose. You were made by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense. Only in God do we discover our origin, our identity, our meaning, our purpose, our significance, and our destiny.”
– Dr. Rick Warren
Author of The Purpose-Driven Life.
So, it should be noted that while they are printing anti-Christianity quotes as Fr. Roderick mentioned, they are not printing ONLY anti-Christian statements.
I was stunned that a caller managed to get in an accusation about Starbucks that was totally ludicrous. I would hate to see Daily Breakfast lose it’s positive tone and it’s credibility at the same time. Be cautious of callers with hidden agendas.
I want to second what Mike F. said. I was taken aback as well when I heard that Starbucks donates to a group that advocates pedophelia. Father, your criticism of “main stream media” and how they handle the news becomes a bit lacking when we see you allowing statements like this before they are actually checked out. We expect better from you. To be fair, I don’t think you expected this kind of response and you did say that you were going to research further and I understand that listener feedback is the opinion of the called and NOT you.
Thanks for following up on your vocation story and your experiences in Lourdes – this is so much more interesting than all this Starbucks stuff……
I just didn’t have time to listen to all the feedback before recording the show. The same can happen to hosts of a live radio show. We cannot always control what people will say. It should be obvious that the feedback that I play on the show does not always reflect my own opinion. But it’s not like I have been distorting facts deliberately, which *is* what main stream media sometimes does.
Father,
your continuing vocation story has truely been one of *the* DB-highlights so far. It would be so great if you found the time and either would:
- edit them together to a single show
or
- put them out as a separate “MyVocation Cast”
Similar to the CI shows I could listen to this great story over and over again.
Thanks and keep up the good work !
Mike
Howdy,
Is there a Catholic kinship created on the Lord of the Rings Online European servers?
We are in the process of creating one on the U.S. servers and are selecting a name. If there is already a kinship formed on the European servers, we would like to use the same name.
Father R. I am not suggesting that the feedback reflects your opinion, nor am I suggesting that you are distorting the facts.
What I am saying is that you now have a responsibility to check the facts because your program is NOT live.
In defense of “main stream media” let me say that there are many many so-called newspapers, TV networks etc. that “claim” to be journalistic and yet all they do is, as you say, distort the facts. But to lump all those tabloids and flashy TV shows in with the great number of outlets that truly make an honest effort to be journalistically responsible is not fair.
The fact that I can say all this right here is to your credit, so don’t get me wrong. I’m just trying to “nudge” you away from the feeling I keep getting from so many that the press is evil and full of anti Catholics, anti Christian and anti morality.
Brent, there is no sqpn kinship on the european servers. Mainly it’s just father R. and me playing together on lauralin the rp server
.
Thanks Eric. We’re currently leaning towards “Heralds of the Great King”
Nice Franciscan name…
Sounds very cool. I hope this doesnt mean you’re all captains running around with their heralds
.
The first listener talking about Starbucks said they sent an email to Starbucks and got a reply.
Aren’t you gonna read out the reply on the show? I was curious about that.
