Great episode! Posted on my blog.
Paul,
First off, another great show despite having me on.
The saint joke on lawyers was rather ironic after talking about St. Thomas More.
Now as for Catholic movies on Saints here are some that can be recommended. This is in no way an exhaustive list, but ones that I have seen and could recommend.
Passion de Jeanne d’Arc – Silent movie, but the best ever made of her. The movie only covers the period of her trial. Most modern movies that cover who life turn her into a proto-feminist and have little to do with the real St. Joan of Arc. (On the Vatican top 100 film list)
Diary of a Country Priest – 1951 French movie based on the novel.
Therese – 1986 – Best movie on St. Terese, and much better than the disappointing 2004 movie on her.
Mother Teresa with Olivia Hussey playing the title role.
The Mission with Robert DeNiro a great movie, but rated R for good reasons. (On the Vatican top 100 film list)
A Man for All Seasons (of course)
Becket – 1964 movie with Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole. Another great movie and sets up in history what happens in A Man for All Seasons.
Bernadette – 1988 French movie on the life of St. Bernadette. Though of course the class movie Song of Bernadette is also pretty good, though not exactly accurate.
The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima – 1952 Hollywood version of the events at Fatima which while a little cheesy in parts is pretty good and fairly accurate. Great family movie.
The Passion of the Christ – In my opinion the best movie ever made on Jesus. Maybe not every bodies cup of tea but it is always in my DVD player on Good Friday.
The Miracle Maker – 2000 – Quite surprising that this stop-motion puppet movie on the life of Christ could be so good, but it is. It accurately portrays the Gospels and is great as a yearly watch as a family film.
Thanks for another great episode, Doc.:-D
Jeff,
Great interview! I used to read your blog daily, but now I’m a little behind on the posts. Actually, I started listening to podcasts after reading your February 12, 2006 post “podcast reviews”.:-)
By the way, people intersted in saint movies can look at the Decent Films website to find reviews of the movies that Jeff mentioned, and more.
