I have the smallest of suggestions: could you take a second or two more before you click “off” on your device? After your last word, you’re gone and my device throws me into the next installment before I can hit “stop.” This is a small thing, I know, but just a little space would help, since I then have to retool to get it back to the right place for beginning of the next prayer.

You’re generous to do this, I realise, as it takes you beyond your daily prayer and into the “future” for the rest of us, which is tricky mentally, especially on the big feasts, or changing from Holy Week to Easter, Advent to Christmastide. Thanks again!

I just wanted to say thank you for all of the hours you put in to recording these prayers for us!

I don’t have a breviary and can’t really afford to get one at this point. (And I don’t know if I could figure out how to use it if I did get one!:) So, I really appreciate being able to listen to these prayers as my day allows.

I often wonder how you find the time to do all of this recording, and in such a timely manner. I wanted to let you know that even though you don’t always hear it, we are out here listening and are GRATEFUL for all you do.

I apologize for the delayed response–I don’t always get to check this blog. Thank you for your feedback–I will slow down with the readings. A couple of years back, I had slowed down to the point that the morning prayer was 17-18 minutes long…then I got feedback that it was TOO slow. Perhaps the 12-14 minute range would work best for the majority of listeners.

2. I do have one comment and a request if you don’t mind. Can the reader PLEASE SLOW DOWN the meter, i.e., the speed at which the psalms are read? The psalms really do have a beautiful rythm to them, but it get’s lost if one races through them. Even for me, who knows a good number of psalms by heart, it’s hard to follow along with the reader racing ahead of me. Another suggestion would be to have two readers reading the psalms antiphonally (alternating on the verses left and right) and reading the responses and intercessions in a call and respond manner.

However, I would ask you slow down just a bit. There are many days I listen on my way to work and find it uplifting and the best part of the day. But there are some days where it goes by so fast I find it difficut, but if I do the prayer by myself and relisten to the podcast it still seems very fast.

Over all I would say its fantastic! I especially like the intentions that are added. Unfortunatly when I was in the Destin area and you mentioned the inentions there I had no time or way to conact you.

First of all, thanks so much for creating this podcast. I’ve only been praying the liturgy of hours for about a year now, after I was diagnosed with leukemia and have been unable to work. With so much time on my hands, I began to deepen my prayer life when a priest friend taught me how to use the Christian Prayer book. Although I’ve been trying my best, I sometimes find my cancer-related fatigue makes it a little difficult for me to stay with it.

I just came across your site and started subscribing via iTunes. As I have become quite familiar with the Divine Office format, I can easily listen in without having to exert myself trying to keep up by reading along.

I do however, have one small request to make, if you don’t mind. I am finding that the speed at which the prayers are said is just a little too fast for me. I mostly just repeat the responses and recite certain of the prayers I know by memory. It’s just that my mental fatigue makes me a little ’slow’ these days, and since I’m not trying to read along, it sometimes feels like everything is coming at me in one big ‘lump’.

Please don’t get me wrong – you’re doing a great job and I realize that the problem is just me. I’m sure most people don’t have any problem with this at all, and that everyone would agree that you are a very clear and articulate reader. But is it possible for you to read just the slightest bit slower, leaving more apparent pauses at the transition points?

You are doing a great service for God’s people, not unlike those who provide televised Mass for shut-ins (God bless EWTN!). May God bless you and your wonderful apostolate.

- Typically, the prayers/readings are split in two only during the liturgical seasons. In ordinary time, they are together (except for the first prayer, the office of readings, which is always split up).

- For the most part, it is OK to pick hymns from either section. One exception: in the general section, some of the hymns have the word “alleluia,” and you can’t say/sing alleluia during Lent.

- Advent is easy: four weeks long. For Lent, Easter and ordinary time, use multiples of 4 to figure out which week to use (i.e., twelfth week in ordinary time uses Week IV).

- After Lent and Easter, return to the ordinary time sequence. For example, if there were three weeks of ordinary time before Lent, then after the Easter season resume the fourth week in ordinary time.

Again, thank you for your help and time. I have to be honest, this is all new and, at first, was extremely confusing. It was my friend that actually suggested following along with your podcast that helped me to understand.

I guess my only question is this… (and this is based upon the Christian Prayer Book)

I understand that the book is split in two (probably more as I only go back to the Lenten section) parts. You have the ordinary “4 week” section. I follow this up to the reading and then go to the suggested other part depending upon special events (in this case – Lent). Now that I am writing this, I guess I have a few more questions–so, assuming you have the time–not sure if you’d rather do this via email.

1) Assuming that I only look at these two sections for my prayer–I assume it is OK to pick the Hymn from either section–preferably the “special” section (in this case Lent). What I mean is–there isn’t anywhere else or some special circumstance that would require a different Hymn?

2) Is there a site out there that basically helps you figure out how to figure out what part of the cycle a certain day is? I know that they offer the yearly companions—but is there a rule of thumb to figure this out on my own–a web site that might teach me how to learn this?

3) I understand that this is a 4-week cycle, correct? So–is the special section a 4-week cycle too? In this case–does Lent/Easter run past the 4-week–so that I will finish the 4-week cycle and return to a week one in the ordinary–but follow along in the Lent cycle for the readin-on?

I am terribly sorry for all the questions–I am just very excited about this–and it has helped my prayer life. I was going crazy when I visited my in-laws this weekend and couldn’t download the podcasts to go along with.

Thank you for your kind words. To answer your question: I use the hymns from the four-volume Liturgy of the Hours. I happen to have a Shorter Christian Prayer book (different from Christian Prayer book), so I often say the corresponding number for those using the SCP book. Since I don’t have the CP book, I can’t list those numbers.

On weekends not in Ordinary Time, the four-volume set specifically recommends appropriate seasonal hymns (although you could really do this throughout the week). I just typically use hymns from that section in sequential order, avoiding Latin ones so as not to embarrass myself too much.

I have one question, however–one that my friend and I could not explain. Several times, you will say a different Hymn than what I have in my red “Christian Prayer” book. For example, this morning called for 14 or 5–but you did 47 (I believe). Also, over the weekend (and this was new to me–as during other days there isn’t a note on the “Lenten Season” side of the book that I flip to for readings that tells you what Hymn to use–but once I saw that, it helped–but you didn’t use the Hymn there–I believe it might have been Saturday–it called for 96 – you did 97). Is there some guide you use for Hymns?? Am I not doing it right if I am using a different Hymn?
