  1. Fr.,

Actually the suggestion given to configure the mac to automatically download podcasts to the i-pod when connected, will work for a pc/windows laptop. The names of the options are changed depending on the brand of laptop but every one of those steps is possible.

Add I-tunes to the start up folder.
set up the smart lists as described (set to check on a regular interval and to sync with the i-pod playlists aren’t strictly necessary)
set option to start itunes when ipod connects
set power options to power down if idle for appropriate interval.

Show him where the power button is. Show him where to plug the i-pod

  2. hey fr. it’s chester again. If you’re wanting to leave the bishop something to actually show him what to do, check out http://www.jingproject.com it will let you capture video and screen shots to show him click here, then here, then here, etc… just heard about it today on another podcast.

  3. Seems like the simple if temporary answer is to load an ipod with music and podcasts you thing the Cardinal would enjoy. Let him take it on vacation. If he enjoys it, then you can tackle the problem of renewing the episodes.

  4. I’m running Windows XP and I will make a list in Dutch how to set it up using iTunes on a PC and email it. One of the things I had to learn for my psychology study was making a task analysis and documentation for soft/hardware to make everything user-friendly. ;)

  5. Father Roderick,

I’m *very* anxious for you to finish Deathly Hallows so we can hear your thoughts! Would you mind sharing what page you’re on? You said something a few episodes ago that made me think you’d be done by now.

    Thanks & happy reading!

  6. Regarding the listener with the iPhone problem, she should have done her research! It’s right there in the technical specifications http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html
She has absolutely no reason to rant about something that is in plain english on Apple’s site and probably also somewhere on the box.

  7. Fr. Roderick,

You must remember that much of this technology was developed by Americans who can be mioptic regarding foreign languages.

However there were technological problems also. The original international alphabet was based on 5-bits which did not allow for accented character. The internation comunity then standardize on “Internation Alphabet 5(IA5)” which was limited to 7 bits which was the same as ASCII the US standard with a few national extensions. The mainframe computers again were limited to 6 or 7 bit characters. This is the problem with airline reservation systems.

I don’t know why you have a problem in Windows. The Windows Dutch keyboard accepts Dutch accents using two stroke entry. There are many other national varient keyboards.

On the other hand Germany solved the problem by having an alternate entry for special character. The umlauted O (Ö) can be entered as OE.

  10. Forgot to mention: To make exotic characters using a US layout keyboard it’s very easy: just select a US international keyboard WITH DEAD KEYS ON.
So I can write your surname Vonhögen by first typing ” first (but it doesn’t appear) and then ‘o’. The o-umlaut appears then. It’s called a ‘trema’ in Dutch.

A second option is ASCII coding by pressing the left ALT key and a number on your windows keypad (on the right hand side of the keyboard). Wikipedia on it

  11. Fr. Roderick,

About setting up a system so your arch-bishop can get his daily podcasts, I say think small. Think Mini, Mac Mini. The cost, relative to other Macs or even Windows machines could be kept in line.

Also, about the woman who could not use her iPhone because she still is running Panther, I would take exception to your comment. Up until now, she has been doing perfectly well with Panther and apparently has not seen the need for Tiger. She clearly doesn’t mind being a little behind the curve. So why not upgrade to Tiger right now and either skip Leopard altogether or upgrade to it in the future?

  12. thought so, Agar, thanks……

  13. Have you thought of setting up Remote Desktop” on his PC and you can login to it and configure/control his podcasts and maintain his updates.

  14. If you setup Remote Desktop on his PC, you can even login and work on his pc from your smartphone.
