  1. I so agree with your assessment of the epilogue to the Harry Potter series. It reminds me of the cheesy ending of Return of the Jedi. I really hated that goofy family portrait at the end (although I liked the music!). It was just too sacharine for me. Rowling didn’t quite get as goopy sweet as Lucas, but she came real close with those names!

Also, have you given Deep Space 9 a chance? It has great analytical opportunities. I think the characters there have greater depth because the adventures had to come to them, thus I believe character development was a greater need and better executed with that series. Incidentally, during the tribute to 30 years of Star Trek, Deep Space had a crossover episode that included time travel to the ST:TOS “Trouble with Tribbles” episode, and it was brilliantly done.

    Catch you on Facebook!

  2. I often have podcasts pile up in my iPod and I try to catch up but I agree with Father. Sometimes you just have to dump some. For me, that’s the news shows or longer programs. However, the relationships that I feel I’ve formed with the more personal shows (Daily Breakfast, Rosary Army, Catholic in a Small Town, Catholic Family, etc.) make it much harder. I usually just carve out a good chunk of time and go through them. It would feel wrong to just delete those shows without listening to them.

  3. St. Meinrad’s Abbey also offers weekend retreats for lay persons. They are a wonderful way to recharge your emotional batteries. After a hectic week at work, checking into the abbey on Friday evening just in time for Vespers is like stepping into a decompression chamber. The simplicity and beauty of the place is so relaxing. The retreats are informative but there is always plenty of time for meditation.

  4. Finally finding time to listen to some podcasts today… so:

Welcome to Facebook, Father Roderick! And, thanks for your friendship there.

Facebook is a place to make friends — a place to learn and discover — and a place to *waste time* — kinda like university life!

    Peace to your day.

  5. Dear Father Roderick,
Thank you for your review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. My friends and I have been discussing that final book in the series ever since it was released a month ago.
You mentioned that you see symbolism of the Eucharist in this final book. Would you mind giving a couple of examples of where you see this. I’ve written a couple of academic papers on sacramentalism in the Harry Potter series and have seen Eucharistic symbolism in the last book, Half-Blood Prince, but not as much this one. Your insights would be greatly appreciated! (And I promise to give you an acknowledgement if I use your examples in my paper.)
Thanks! I love the Daily Breakfast. Keep up the good work!

  6. The past two summers I’ve fallen behind on DB episodes because I listen to the show when I drive to work in the morning–and I don’t work during the summer because I’m a teacher. I just skip most of the episodes. But, I don’t miss a lot because Fr. Roderick doesn’t keep a strict daily schedule over the summer either.
