  1. Everyone, yes, we’ll definitely plan some time for SQPNers to get together while Fr. Roderick is in Austin. More to come on this…

Meanwhile, please consider registering for the Written On Our Hearts conference that he is speaking at. It’s one of a few conferences for Catholic young adults (18-39) in the USA. Learn more and register at http://writtenonourhearts.org

  2. Wow Father, you are so awesome to post the link to my little novella. You rock!

I’ve been having great fun with facebook and meeting so many people from the sqpn listenership. What a neat socialization tool. I hope you and the listeners go over to my facebook page to check out a video that animoto.com created from the pics from the Conyers meet and greet. I’ve been having a lot of fun with that application (so much fun that I missed the DB until tonight!). It’s another really cool way to connect with each other.

    Cheer!

  3. wow, I’m amazed at how bitter you are fr. Rod. I just listened to your Mormon podcast and I’m amazed that u didn’t even take the time to get your facts straight. I am a diet catholic who has studied with the Mormons over a period of a year or so. I am insure whether to join or not. I’m on the fence with all religion at the moment, but the things you said in the episode were I’m afraid incorrect. Joseph smith didn’t write the book of Mormon, he translated it. It is a record of people in the Americas that tells of Jesus’ visit to them after his resurrection. I’m just surprised that you would go to such lengths to call these people wrong outright. To dissaude people from talking to them. We should study other religions. If we have no tolerance for people’s belifes we are just as guilty as the Jew with the samaritans, or the extremist Muslims. I just found your comments came from a perspective of contempt of the people who in your mind are probably “sheep stealers”. I thought it was a very un Christian attitude you presented and I expected more from a man of God. The mormons are in fact the most Christ-like people ive ever met. Their book of mormon which is a companion to thw bible says ” we talk of Christ, and we preach of Christ”. They also have an unrivaled humanitarian aod system. Within 24 hrs of a disaster planes and trucks are on their way with relief for people regardless of their religous beliefs. To say they are unchristian is a falsity.I do not write this to “flame” you. Only to say I was a little disappointed in the way u handled it. Thank you. P.S. I do apologize for the use of stronger language at the beginning of my comment. I used it for lack of a better term. Please don’t take offence to it. None was meant.

  4. Hi Father,

I would love to bring my family out to meet with you on Austin… will you be there for Saturday as well? Maybe for the meet and greet?

  5. Larry–

In your post you use the term “Christian” as meaning “morally upstanding.” A person can have high moral character, and not be a Christian. (Unfortunately, there are also Christians who are NOT morally upstanding–Christ Himself describes His Church as having both weeds and wheat.)

In no way did Fr. Roderick question the moral character of LDS members, and even went out of his way to avoid doing so. The term “orthodox Christian” implies certain minimum beliefs, to which the LDS church either does not adhere, or distorts.

There is plenty of clear, useful information from websites such as Catholic Answers and Envoy Magazine, which you can use to compare with information from LDS websites.

  6. jeff,

Thank you for your comments. However, just because people don’ t believe in the trinity should not be a reason to call them non-christian. I personally would be offended if someone called me a non christian even though i know that i belice in and follow jesus christ. I just don’t see how you(people in general, not you jeff) can call these people non christian when they do all they can to follow christ and try to live the way that He taught us to live. I just don’t agree with that as it doesn’t make sense to me. Nothing personal, just my thoughts.

  7. In regards to the “Format Wars” with HD-DVD and BluRay, you stated that you don’t care about Disney movies. I think you may want to reconsider that since the Pirates of the Caribbean movies are Disney movies and are BluRay only as far High Definition goes.

The TV show Heroes will be HD-DVD only because NBC is owned by Universal which is an HD-DVD only studio.

    Larry,
Belief in the Trinity is one of the basic tenets to being Christian. Lack of the belief in this, by definition, does mean the person is not a Christian.

As for Mormonism, you should keep an open mind. Try going to the Catholic RCIA program while you are studying with the Mormons. I can recommend listening to the old (2005) Catholic-Mormon podcasts (http://catholicmormon.libsyn.com/) as they explained the process that a couple went through when deciding between the Catholic and Mormon faiths.

No one has said that Mormons are not wonderful people to interact with. They are great neighbors and friends. They are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. But their beliefs are not in line with Christianity. Read up on it: http://www.catholic.com/library/Distinctive_Beliefs_of_Mormon.asp

  8. You had voice feedback from a blind listener. He said he could not use several “Web 2.0″ type apps because they are too graphical. With regards to Twitter, there is the lightweight version (intended for mobile phone web browsers) that tosses all the Javascript/AJAX from the default page. It is a vanilla HTML type page that should be compatible with the web screen readers that many blind computer users have. I know I can render it correctly with the command line web browser called “elinks” so it would probably work for the blind. The URL is:
http://m.twitter.com/ . Hope that helps him.

  9. Hi!

I too have bought my first Lulu book last week. Forever Fifteen by Kimberly Steele. I listened to that book in podcast form at Podiobooks, but wanted to have it in printed form too, so I can lend to my friends. =)
