  1. Stardust actually skews more as an adult fairy tale than as a kid one, though the movie is quite well acted and very well done. It is too bad that it hasn’t got more attention.

The movie is based on a book by Neil Gaiman and the book is quite enjoyable, though there is one erotic (but not too explicit) scene in it.

I can’t believe you have not seen The Princess Bride! I think I have seen it about six times over the years and it is always enjoyable.

  2. OMGoodness, Fr. Roderick; see the Princess Bride!

Yes, Stardust is not so much for kids, although I think some of the age-inappropriate aspects would fly over kids’ heads. Or maybe not; unfortunately, kids are not as sheltered as I was.

  3. The hats (galleros) of the cardinals of the Archdiocese of Chicago are also hung above the sanctuary of Holy Name Cathedral (or see here), even though they are not buried there; seven bishops of various rank (including at least three, of I believe five, cardinal-archbishops) of the (arch)diocese are buried in the Bishops’ Mausoleum at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside.

I agree with Jeff and Naomi about Stardust, though I would also say that it leans somewhat toward farce in places, and Robert De Niro very nearly steals the show as Captain Shakespeare.

  4. Actually, from the second link to the cathedral web site I posted above, another explanation is given:

“Immediately above the sanctuary panels, you can see five red, broad-brimmed, ornamental hats suspended from the ceiling. Traditionally, this symbol of a Cardinal is raised to the ceiling of his cathedral upon his death. The hat hangs until it turns into dust, a reminder that all earthly glory is passing.”

  5. Fr. Roderick,
It would be nice to hear what’s going on in your parish. I don’t think I’ve ever heard you talk about your parish. Will you please tell us maybe a little something each week? Thanks.
