Today’s show: Listen

Thanks for your stewardship and the podcasts.
I’ve been listening now for over a year, and would have loved to have been there rooting for you silently in the picture auction.
I love your homilies and yes todays metaphor really helped me, especially as I couldn’t grasp the concept during mass earlier today.
On a technical Geek section note;
May God keep you strong in your vocation.
As for the Hum on the video feeds. It sounds as though you’ve got a classic case of a Ground Hum. (you could google this term!) Basically its a noise induced by the Electrical Mains 120V60Hz. In your case the 60Hz hum is coming from your mixer sources into the cameras input.
While it seems as a treat the camera may have an Automatic Gain control, this can be heard coming in and out as a pumping up and down in the level (noise).
As the engineering in Star trek said. You need more power. (but maybe not hum!)
So the general questions for all you podcasters out there in the same situation..
Can you increase the output of your microphones? While at the same time decrease the sound level of the sound re-enforcement/PA output?
This should then mean that the main recorder output of the mixer which you are using as a feed for your camera is set at a greater audio level, this should reduce the about of AGC noise level pumping, which is currently cutting in and out, as well as increasing the difference between the sound level needed and the noise level, I.E increase the dynamic range of the audio to reduce the perceived noise floor.
(If this doesn’t work you may have to look into more professional methods of reducing hum by using Balanced audio sources, only unbalencing them when you go into the audio mixer, this is a whole other story.)
Geek segment over, don’t try this 10 mins before the next Mass or your parishioners may come and find me
God Bless
p.
I always enjoy your homilies, and this week’s was a tough one for everybody. How’s this for amazing? My pastor started his homily with the admission that he always struggles with trying to communicate on this topic, and generally feels that he fails. He addressed it adequately enough, though, and in closing he made a general statement about the resources that are available for evangelization, and specifically mentioned how technology has forwarded the cause of evangelization. I immediately thought of you and what the homily would be. Nicely done.
I especially love that you got your painting. It is clearly wrought with symbolism, and how God’s light works through “you” too.
