My iTunes just downloaded this episode but it’s only 1:19 in length. It cuts off during the “what’s going on in your part of the world” feedback.
Same with listening from the website.
Sometimes Libsyn drives me insane. I’ve reuploaded the file twice now, and it keeps doing this!
Ok, I think I solved the problem. Libsyn apparently delivers files from a cache, and no matter how many times you reupload the original file, if the cached file is corrupt, Libsyn keeps serving it! I changed the filename and the RSS feed. That has tricked the Libsyn service into refreshing its cache. Sorry for the trouble.
Libsyn: please don’t drop the ball on this. It happens a bit too often!
Another wonderful Breakfast! (It’s working fine now.)
Coincidentally (although I don’t believe in coincidences
) there is a photo of the Thailand ‘Loy Katrong’ festival floating lanterns on the msnbc.com site. To find the photo look on the left side of the page – under ‘Browse’ hold the mouse over ‘Photos’ then ‘The Week in Pictures’ then click on ‘Nov. 22 – 29′. The #2 photo is the festival. It looks amazing!
Great work, Father – thanks so much… Kim
Thanks for sorting the file problem Father! I’m going on a train journey tomorrow so very pleased to have the full Daily Breakfast on my iPod to go with me.
Thanks again and God bless!
Please take a look at this!
Please join us in starting this novena November 30 (today), which will end
on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The movie The Golden Compass was
written by someone who has been quoted as saying,
“I’m trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief”
I am all for the death of God.”
“My books are about killing God.”
It is scheduled to open the day before the feast. This movie has been
watered down in an attempt to entice people to buy his book series His Dark
Materials.
Please forward this to all who may participate.
Intention for the Novena:
For people to realize the danger of this movie and not support it.

That is a nice long prayer Ben. Maybe we should hear first hand from some mainstream christians who actually see the movie or better yet see & hear it for ourselves before we make up our minds.
And we should remember that it is only a fiction movie and the goodness of Christ & is so much bigger than any single movie.
Peace & God Bless,
Michael
Michael C, you’re reservation of judgment for the film would be admirable if we were talking about something new, but the film is based on one of a trilogy of books that is written by an avowedly atheistic author. Please let me know what the “mainstream Christians” whose judgment you’re waiting for think about the full story, which ends with the trilogy’s “God character” being killed and the children thus being free to live their lives as they wish. If that’s mainstream, count me out.
You’re right that some dumb movie can’t diminish Christ. That doesn’t mean we need to put up with it.
Hi! Just so you know, if you click on the right arrow in iTunes it points to http://www.dailybreakfast.com which apparently doesn’t exist. Would you please correct this?
Fr Rod,
I think you should come out with a secrets of his dark materials. I’m also abit concerned about the movie as it has anti-christian undertones in the series. The magistarium being the church is seen to be the evil entity in the series. I have read the series and know the story so I will reserve judgement until I see the flick next weekend. I just feel that a public announcement should be made to let unsuspecting people know of its anti-christian meaning in an otherwise hollywood popcorn affair.
Just something I came across.

Regards,

Steve O’Neill, so-called big movies come & go all the time but we always should keep in mind some important points. Seeing a movie is always a choice so unless you pay your hard earned money out you are never going to have to “put up with it”. Also, everyone knows that it is “fiction” that is a “fantasy” that no one has suggested in any way has any reality to it at all.
I can’t afford to see it(if I see it) until it comes to the budget theater but I think we all should reserve any judgement on something we haven’t seen only until after we see it.
It would seem that there are so many much much more real serious problems in the world than making a contrived problem of a have to pay to see it fiction fantasy movie that is in fact a very short flash in the pan.
Peace & God Bless,
Michael
Father Roderick,
Probably already mentioned somewhere on the boards, and is probably somewhere in your notebook, but you should consider a Secrets of His Dark Materials or at least Secrets of the Golden Compass. Since this was written, and the movie produced (it seems), as a direct opposition to the Chronicles of Narnia, as an atheist answer to their message, and since B16 has just issued his encyclical reminding the world of the cruelty that is atheism, it seems a natural.
Of course, I say that as one who’s not actually going to do it. Just throwing in a vote that it would be a good and valuable teaching aid.
Your the best,
-Terry
I saw a Starbucks in Paris when I went there in May. Looks like they’re planning a european invasion.
Interesting that the concept of ’spiritual judo’ came up. I’ve recently become very interested in taking up martial arts and in my research, I found that it’s all pretty much about not letting angry feelings overcome you, overcoming negativity, avoiding danger; stuff the devil likes. Why not add that to your Healthy Catholic video podcast
Okay, first off I’ll throw out something to Bernard & Terry: The “Secrets of” series are intended to show the world the Catholic elements in Star Wars or Narnia or Lord of the Rings. From what I understand, Compass/Dark Elements is on the same ground as the DaVinci Code in terms of edifying the Christian viewer or reader. Therefore, I would expect the Catholic reaction to those sorts of offerings would be markedly different than a “Secrets of.” Look around on other Catholic websites for Golden Compass and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
As for your points, Michael C, you say that seeing a movie is always a choice. You’re right, it is. But did you notice that they’re marketing Compass as fantasy movie cut from the same cloth as Narnia? That worries me — the whole wolf in sheep’s clothing thing. I worry that they’re looking to suck people — kids, especially — in with a benign-seeming movie, but then plant their message (an anti-God message, at the end of the day) through the film. If the film is the least bit like the books, there’s nothing redeeming about them in the end, and I frankly don’t see how people of faith can, in good conscience, spend their money at the box office on such a film.
That’s only my opinion, though — My prayers for humility are often answered…
Pax et bonum to all.
Why are references to the SQPN fund drive expressed in dollar amounts–$100 per month, $50 per month, etc.?
Why not $100 per month or 70 Euro per month, or 50 pounds?
It makes it appear that the fundraising is limited to the US.
There are already so many strident, angry voices denouncing Golden Compass and other movies, books, etc…I don’t think it is Fr. Roderick’s style to go on an “anti-” anything campaign, although he does let his thoughts be known. While others may be effective in the use of righteous anger, I think Fr. Roderick has an excellent sense of what works for his audience, and how he can best use his talents of humor and gentle persuasion in the service of God and His Church.
Fr.Leo was on life on the rock this week, a very good episode. I thought it was funny because you recently were talking about him during the daily breakfast.
I have to say that I agree with Steve O’Neill, as consumers our power, and the only one Hollywood will listen too, is the sound of money, if you go watch the movie, you are saying this is what you want as a consumer and you are happy to give your money to movies that carry this message.
There is a movie showing in limited release in the US call BELLA, it is a beutiful message about the sacredness of life. I am wondering, how many people are making the effort to go and watch BELLA. Spend your money wisely, don’t tell Hollywood that you enjoy movies with any kind of agenda against Christianity, whether is is a direct attack or a hidden message. Why can’t we support good movies? Last year there was another low budget movie call GUADALUPE, about the mirable of Our Lady of Guadalupe, beautiful movie, great message of conversion. How many people chose to see that one instead of the big Hollywood production.
As Catholic we need to become wiser consumers.
Lastly, I wanted to paste Bishops Gregory Aymond from the Diocese of Austin in Texas’s statement about this topic published in his weekly Friday Epistle:
“Statement on ‘The Golden Compass’
The upcoming movie version of “The Golden Compass” has led to questions about the trilogy of books by Philip Pullman. Catholic schools and religious education programs should not encourage children to read any of these books and they should not be held in their libraries. “The Golden Compass” attempts to devalue religion, especially Christianity. Our children deserve better education than what is in these books and movie.”
It appears that some of the early reviews of The Golden Compass are mixed so maybe some of the fuss about the movie could be making a mountain out of a molehill. Of course what any big mainstream movie is about is making money and not some secret hidden agenda. After the first weekend & week we’ll know how well it is doing. It opens December 7, 2007
Like any movie, anyone has the free will choice whether to see a single movie or not and if someone choses to criticize a movie it would be the responsible thing to actually see it first so they know exactly what is & what is not in it.
Here is a few links for information, early reviews, comments & trailers:

Maybe what we should really keep in mind is that the love and peace of Christ and God is so much greater than any manmade entertainment, especially a single solitary movie.
Peace & God Bless,
Michael
Very interesting. According to catholicana.com, the review from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Office of Film and Broadcasting isn’t as harsh as one would think: http://www.catholicnews.com/data/movies/07mv242.htm

Thanks a lot

Hello Fr Roderick,
I’ve finally resurfaced again in SQPN-world and I am trying to catch up with the daily breakfast. Done 20 over the last 4 days have another 43 to go, so hopefully in a week (or two) I’ll be up to speed. Unfortunately it seems I can’t download or listen to this episode. I saw in your comment that you fixed it, or just tried to anyway, but may be you can give it another go?!
It’s good to be back again especially episode 390 was very interesting and very, very funny.

I’ve reuploaded the file with a different filename and corrected the RSS feed; it should play via the link on the website. You might have to refresh your RSS feed so that your podcast aggregator can ’see’ the new file.
Welcome back
YES, it worked! So now I don’t have to miss a single show
