“Vatican lists new Deadly Sins!” …Really? What is the truth behind these headlines?

When I listened back to this episode, I noticed that I confused the notion of ‘deadly sin’ with ‘mortal sin’ (in Dutch, ‘deadly’ can be translated with ‘mortal’)
The mortal sins are the ones that kill your relationship with God. According to the Catechism, “Mortal sin destroys charity in the heart of man by a grave violation of God’s law; it turns man away from God, who is his ultimate end and his beatitude, by preferring an inferior good to him.” (1855)
The Catechism calls deadly sins “capital sins”: “Vices can be classified according to the virtues they oppose, or also be linked to the capital sins which Christian experience has distinguished, following St. John Cassian and St. Gregory the Great. They are called “capital” because they engender other sins, other vices. They are pride, avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth or acedia.” (1866)
Sorry about the confusion!
At the start of the podcast, you mention purchasing ‘articles’ at Amazon. At first I though you were talking about blog posts being published and I was wondering why people didn’t just print them…. then the penny dropped…. you meant ‘products’ – as in “purchase products” not articles as in “magazine articles”. Must be one of those little linguistic nuances that confuse Australians….
Don’t get me started on planes that land “momentarily” (American = land soon, Australian = land briefly and take off straight away)….
So is ‘articles’ wrong in US/UK English as well? And if so, why didn’t anyone correct me before? Have mercy on this ignorant Dutch priest, I need all the help I can get!
No, not wrong, just less colloquial. Don’t let it trouble you. “Items” might be more colloquial, or just “things.”
It is perfectly OK to say what you have been saying, at least in the view of this American English teacher. The word “Article” has more than one meaning. Article as in magazine article, or article as in an article of clothing or any object. It can also mean a little tiny word like “a” “an” or “the.” Personally, I never thought of “magazine article” during the commercial.
Hi Father I have a week lisent the podcast, Im learning english(lisent to you help me so much)…Im from Guatemala Central America, I just want you know I like your podcast, I wish you all the best, God bless you. Dios le bendiga y lo colme de bendiciones!
Ha! I just noticed the “articles” comment at the beginning of the podcasts…
I think “items” or “products” is more appropriate then articles. Articles, to me, means like journals or “articles in the newspaper”.
Anyways, another great podcast, keep up the great work Fr. Roderick.
Hi father I want to know what you think about the edition of the Manga bible, do u think is part of the new age movement?
Hi Father,
Just some comment about the ‘levelling’ problem you mentioned. In the theatre or with a live musical performance, this problem occurs a lot with people talking into microphones or especially drum kits being amplified with microphones. A piece of hardware device that solves this is a compressor. It sort of monitors the input level of the signal you send into it and if this input level is above a certain threshold (that you can modify) it compresses its output level with a certain ‘ratio’ that is also adjustable. I think this could be just the kind of device you’re looking for, but I don’t know if it is available in a software program sort of thing. Otherwise you have to root all the external audio you want to record through this hardware compressor before recording it into your podcast recording program. (You’re still with me? If not and you wanted to be, please contact me by email…)
I know you asked for hardware for levelling and you are probably already aware of this, but have you tried mp3 Gain (http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/) ??
You could load ALL your files at one time and level them all to a pre-determined level. If you store all of them in one directory, you could run MP3 Gain on that directory.
This morning, as I was listening to this and you hit that loud part, I jumped a mile and it scared the H*LL out of me.. which is a good thing!
Hi Father Roderick and all!
I am the feedback person who called in about Media Missionaries.
Each week I will have a new “pick” in my “Make the Connection” Column of the bulletin. I will also be burning “sampler” Cd’s that you and Greg put together and handing out after Mass.
I plan to feature different media each week. Next week I’ll be focusing on Priests for Life as they are giving a talk at our church in April. And the following week I’ll feature Jason Evert as he is coming to our parish next month.
Thanks again for all you do.
Joyous Easter to you and all the listeners!

Here is what I am putting in the bulletin this week:(I’ll review podcasts and other media more in depth in upcoming bulletins)
In 2005 Pope John Paul II wrote an apostolic letter entitled: THE RAPID DEVELOPMENT OF THE HOLY FATHER JOHN PAUL II TO THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMMUNICATIONS.
http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/apost_letters/documents/hf_jp-ii_apl_20050124_il-rapido-sviluppo_en.html
In it he called for the use of media and technology among the faithful: “Do not be afraid of new technologies! These rank “among the marvelous things” – inter mirifica – which God has placed at our disposal to discover, to use and to make known the truth, also the truth about our dignity and about our destiny as his children, heirs of his eternal Kingdom”
So with that, my “make the connection” pick this week is http://www.sqpn.com
“SQPN (Star Quest Production Network) is a multimedia organization specializing in the production of audio and video programs faithful to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Its mission is to respond to the Church’s call to use the media for religious information, for evangelization and catechesis and for formation and education¹.”
While that description is a little dry, I have to say, it’s an exciting website!
I like to listen to their podcasts. If you are not familiar with what a podcast is, it is like a radio or tv program that is recorded and put on the internet. You can subscribe to a podcast or just watch/listen to a single episode via your computer or mp3 player.
Wishing you a joyous Easter!

Hi Father Roderick,
Like Gerran and Michael mentioned, you could use a compressor on the whole DB program, or you could use a normalizer (like mp3gain) on each individual clip.
Besides a hardware compressor, you can indeed use software for the same task. Audacity and Sox are both free open source tools that include this function (and many many other features).
‘The Levelator’ is apparently a combination of normalizer and compressor. It’s free to use, so it could be worth a shot. The big disadvantage seems to be that it uses WAV or AIFF as input and output, so perhaps it would not be so convenient to simply drag-and-drop an episode of the Daily Breakfast onto it as a post-production step. If only it would take MP3, it would be almost perfect.
