I know exactly what you mean about facebook. One of the main reasons why I chose to go for facebook instead of MySpace was because every time I visited someone MySpace page it would be total sensory overload, you’ll have bright colors blinding your, loud blaring music that you have no interest in, pictures and videos absolutely everywhere placed at random. You’ll have the background picture making reading anything next to impossible etc etc. When I first started Facebook it was simple, there were friends and then there were “groups”. So all you had was a social networking site where you talked to friends and discussed issues that interested you. Now that facebook has been opened up to 3rd party apps it’s just becoming like MySpace, when you look at people’s profiles and all you see it their Jedi score, there movie quizzes the “Fun Wall” which should be renamed the “spam wall” where every chain letter ends up, and just every other useless bit of information. I remember one friend who I wanted to write a message to which as facebook users know involves writing on someone “wall”, well I couldn’t find their wall, there were so many pictures and useless crud on their page that I simply could not find out how to do, what once was, the most basic feature of facebook (communicating).
Sorry to go on a bit of a rant, but I just keep thinking of the “good ol’ days” of facebook and how they seem to be gone forever now.
Anyways… good to hear about your luggage. I guess with all the traveling it was bound to happen eventually.
Glad to have you more active @ Twitter again, Father!
I was hearing some recent programs from the Daily Breakfast since I had not been able to do so with my mp3 player (helps me to concentrate better).
In program 471 you mentioned Facebook Fatigue and I wanted to apologize because I might have annoyed you with the chat. A friend had told me about this chat a day before or so and I wanted to give it a try when I saw you online. I should have known you can’t be chatting with all of your fans, because you are very busy. Again, sorry about that.
I think I might be able to give you a hint on how to eliminate some of the unwanted applications. Go to PRIVACY, then APPLICATIONS, EDIT APPLICATIONs PAGE, select EVENTS and then EDIT SETTINGS You can also work the “News Feed and Mini-Feed” privacy aspects.
I have discovered that not all of the Facebook applications are safe, so I have reduced them basically to those made by Facebooki itself.
I hope this is helpful. Take care and God bless you.
Blessings,
Olga
Hi Olga, don’t worry about it. I’ve been blocking applications for a while now, and this finally seems to reduce the number of requests and messages.
Fr. Roderick,
I love your various podcasts and for that matter most of SQPN.
When it comes to Facebook and Twitter I’m the dissenter … I find twitter much more invasive since even if you only “follow” a few people, folks get to chatting with others (not being followed) and in general there is too much activity for me to pay much attention to it.
Facebook, on the other hand … I do get too many requests to add applications but find it easy to delete them and love sharing pokes with my other (mostly SQPN) friends, and the few applications that I share with them. OF course, I’ve only allowed a limited number of “Friends” which is a “protection” …
I also like that I can be notified in email automatically when something happens to that I can either ignore it until I have time, or take action if it’s something like a ustream event for an SQPN group.
I don’t mind being in the minority on this .. even though I have a business, work over half time for a brokerage firm and deal with many other things and issues, I’m 65 and am probably less “in tune” with what’s “hot” and what’s not.
Keep up the GREAT WORK ..
Lavona
Hi Father, may be I missed something, but the other day I realised the show starts in the nice ‘old’ way without the commercial. Hope for you and the team it doesn’t mean you lost the sponsorship, though.
Fr. Roderick,
I’m sorry you had such an ordeal with your luggage. I also lost my luggage several years ago traveling home from California. I had to call the airline and it was quite a long ordeal. I had to try to remember everything I had in my bag and decide what it might be worth. I never had my luggage recovered and instead was issued a check from them. I never check luggage anymore.
Facebook Fatigue is a real situation, but for the benefits far outweigh the negatives. It allows me to connect to all my friends, especially my SQPN peeps. Blocking apps is a great thing and I use it daily. It’s just something I’ve learned to deal with.
Sorry this was so long…
P.S. That video is hilarious! Thanks for sharing!
Hi, Father Roderick!
I think the link to follow you on Twitter includes a bit more than it should since when I click it, I’m still at the SQPN website getting a message saying it doesn’t know where I want to be.
@Bob: No idea why that happens, there is nothing wrong with the link. Just go to twitter.com/fatherroderick

Father Roderick,
Could you possibly tell me how to obtain episodes #208 and #209. These are the only ones that I do not have. They are not awailable on iTunes, and I cannot find them on the web site. I like to listen to older episides. It helps to remind me of the changes that I have been making in my spiritual life.
Thank you for any help that you can give me.

Sorry about the double message, Father. I did not realize that the first message posted. When it disappeared, I though that I lost it.
Janet
Hello Jay M.,
The second viewing (combined with the other posts on Facebook fatigue) was good for another laugh. Thanks!
I have not yet explored facebook and it looks like now is not the time to explore it.
Y’all, it may be just me, but I just don’t get twitter!
I’ll just stick to Myspace.
Linda, I had the same problem. I don’t know if I need to take more time to figure it out, or if I was missing something. Let me know if you solve the problem.
Here is a link to a two minute video that will explain what Twitter is and how it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddO9idmax0o
