SBSG #1: The Cylon Who Knew Too Much
Welcome to the first episode of Secrets of Battlestar Galactica, the show where Zina and Jeff will discuss the universal themes and religious symbolism in the SciFi channel’s hit show. This podcast will talk about corrupting knowledge, free will and prophecy in Battlestar Galactica.
The most recently aired episode as of this recording is “The Road Less Traveled”. Feel free to join the conversation in the comments section of the site!

I’m really looking forward to this podcast!
Just learned that the “Final Season” goes on hiatus from the end of May until 2009. Grrrr….. Think I’m going to have to go find some one from SciFi and have a “discussion” with them.
Way to go Jeff and Zina. Excellent job! Well done!
It’s good to see you guys are on sqpn now.
Not finding the feed in iTunes. The link above is a Feedburner/Winpodder link, rather than a “phobos.apple.com” link.
Won’t show in iTunes until a.m. Monday.
Jeff, I don’t think the feed will be on iTunes till Monday. This is a sneak peek.
Itunes feed is updated. Its syncing right now to the IPOD. YIPPEE!!
At the moment, you can add the feed to iTunes manually, but the Secrets of Battlestar Galactica is not included in the iTunes library yet: a show must have a minimum of two episodes to be accepted by Apple. But I’m sure Zina and Jeff will do something about that
I love it! Can’t wait for the next one!
Good discussion! A couple of points about your reference to the Garden of Eden. First, it was not God who said don’t even touch the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, but the serpent who was lying. He extended God’s command, making it more onerous. God only said not to eat of the fruit.
Second and more to your point in the show, it was not the tree of knowledge, per se, but the tree of the knowledge of *good and evil.* That is an important distinction because it’s the difference between interpreting that as God wanting to keep us ignorant or Him being anti-intellectual versus God wanting us to not sin.
Knowledge and “to know” in the Bible often means “to have intimate relations”, as in “Adam knew Eve and they had a son.” So what eating of the fruit of that tree did was to allow Adam and Eve to know, to become intimate not just with good, but also evil.
On point to your discussion, I can’t think of anywhere in Church teaching that we are told not to pursue knowledge of God or to plumb the depths of His mystery. In fact, we are encouraged to do so, as long as we keep in mind that we cannot truly know God, we can’t figure Him out, like a puzzle we solve. St. Thomas Aquinas spent a life time thinking about God and pursuing Truth, and while his may be the greatest intellect of all time, even he at the end of his life looked back on his great body of work and said, “It is all straw.”
There was no intellectual pride in him. He knew that even his great delving could not even scratch the surface of the Truth about God.
I look forward to more thought-provoking episodes of the Secrets of BSG.
Domenico, You are right. Thanks for the corrections. Jeff may actually elaborate more, but in short, misspeaking will happen when we record a first podcast (after putting kids to bed and tired from our “real” lives). We appreciate the feedback, and I am glad you enjoy the show! I am cleaning up SBSG #2 for release right now.
Oh believe me, I understand. I have often written in haste and corrected at leisure on my own blog. I can’t imagine that I would do even that well recording a podcast!
Looking forward to SBSG#2 right now. (Incidentally, my compliments on the production values too; very nice.)
I just started watching Battlestar Galactica - I’m currently on disc 3 of season 1. Can I listen to your podcast, or is it full of spoilers for those of us who have not caught up to the current season?
Chris
Chris, you definitely want to catch up first before listening to this podcast! Don’t even read these comments.. oops.. too late, I guess
Hi Chris,
You may certainly be spoiled.
However, I routinely read spoilers for movies that I want to see. If the movie is really good, the spoilers won’t interfere with my enjoyment of the story.
The writing, acting, and effects are so great in BSG. I actually watched the series out of order so I knew some things that happened. It really didn’t affect me.
I recognize that I am probably in the minority though…
Enjoy the show!
Excellent podcast, thanks! I really like bridging one of my favorite shows with my faith. Super awesome for my mind and soul!
God said if Adam ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil then he would surely die on that day. The talking serpent, who was according to Genesis the most cunning of all the animals, was right; Adam did not die that day. Adam live for hundreds of yahrens.
Your podcast notes that you will be discussing the original series. Will you be discussing Mormonism? Mormonism is the key to TOS and may be the answer to the current series.
Hi Borellian,
Yes, we will be discussion Mormonism. There is a strong LDS Church story in the current series as well.
As far as the original series, we want to talk about the ship of lights and other images and ideas taken from the original series and subtly woven into the re-imagining.
Thanks for listening!
