The College was founded in 1808 and the seminary was originally aligned with the Sulpician seminary, in Baltimore, Saint Mary's, which is the oldest seminary in the United States. "The Mount" as it is known is the second oldest seminary in the U.S. Emmitsburg was the home of Elizabeth Ann Seton. Her community was served by two famous priests from the Mount. The founder, Bishop John Dubois, who later became bishop of New York and Servant of God Simon Brute (pronounced Broo-tay) who later became bishop of Vincennes Indiana (now Indianapolis). Brute was Seton's spiritual director.
