  1. Father - a “hash” weight and BMI are misleading. Better to use body fat percentage to maintain the ration of fat to muscle. The smaller plates is old trick and really clever. btw - a bagel can be considered caloric wise as 5 pieces of bread.

  4. Perhaps we could request Fr. R record it at a time that will help achieve the biggest audience and best exposure for SQPN and turn it into a promotional segment…along with discussion on the upcoming World Youth event in Australia.

  5. Comedian, HBO’s ‘Real Time’ host and agnostic Bill Maher was Not involved with the movie ‘BORAT’.

    The director of Borat(Larry Charles) is also the director of ‘RELIGULOUS’ and the tv series ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’.

    ‘Religulous’ appears to be an attempted tongue-in-cheek humorous look at the strange and/or extreme elements of some religions.

    It might be somewhat interesting but I’ll wait and watch it on DVD.

  6. I think Michael Moore changed the popular concept of what a documentary is for. He makes it very clear that he is trying to advance an agenda… he is not a journalist. Bill Maher is following suit. By the way, his name is pronounced “Mah-er”, quickly , like “mar”.

  7. You’re in luck as far as the weather here in Atlanta is concerned, Father. We’re getting rain this week so the heat wave is beginning to recede. Which means the high temps will “only” be in the 20s/30s during the conference.

  8. There’s another religious quasi-documentary on the horizon called Bloodline. I can’t tell from watching the trailer (http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/bloodline/) whether it is a fictional story told documentary-style, or a “real” documentary.

  9. I used the website http://valtaf.nl/ to calculate the calories I ate on a given day. Probably you already of the site’s existence, but I post it anyway. ;)

  10. Finally got the chance to listen to 497.

    Bill Maher is annoying and way too full of himself. And here is one more good example of it.

    He has been attacking Christianity for years and has now escalated the attacks with a movie he is calling a documentary.

    It is not a documentary.

    It is an editorial from a boring guy using his same old boring material. Another media type that has made a career out of stirring up controversy.

    Boycott his movies; boycott his show; and boycott his appearance on other shows. Our time is better spent somewhere else.

  11. I can also recommend a calorie-counting website - http://www.myfooddiary.com. It already has listings of thousands of food items from both the grocery store and from popular restaurant chains to help with counting your daily calories, and with a little personal information, can give you a plan that helps you balance your calories with the right types of food (carbs, protein, etc.), credits you for exercise time, etc.

    Fr. Roderick, is it possible that perhaps you are eating too few calories? I’ve heard from both doctors and nutritionists that when one does not eat enough (which can happen with a lot of exercise), the body goes into a conservation mode - essentially avoiding starvation by holding onto as much fat as it can. One needs the right balance to actually lose weight.

    The other thing that can help is eating smaller portions more frequently- every 3 hours or so. This keeps the body consistently fueled rather than swinging from sugar highs to lows.

  12. I agree with Jessica’s comments above. I had the same thought while listening to this episode — knowing how much you run. Make sure the calories are enough. I watch The Biggest Loser reality show and too low calorie intake often is the catalyst for a weight loss plateau. When I attended Weight Watcher meetings, some participants would not eat enough “points” thinking fewer points was better. Then, the scales would not budge.

  13. Fr Roderick, you are talking about the plateau in your weight. Are you sure you that you are eating too much? It could well be that you are eating too little! Changing from dinner- to breakfast plates in the evening doesn’t sound good to me. It might even make the problem worse!

    You are going to count calories. That’s a good way to see what’s actually going on. Check on my website http://www.slank-en-sterk.nl/ what your body would actually need. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s much more than you are eating at this moment. There’s also a manual on increasing your food intake without gaining weight (and later on adjusting it in such a way that you’ll actually start loosing weight again). Unfortunately for most of your listeners the site is in Dutch, but you yourself can of course read and follow it, and perhaps discuss some of it in your podcast later on.
