I agree with Lyn. I believe that if the quote could be attributed to Percival, we’d have learned more about him in the book.

I believe it was from Albus, in his realization of what his behaviour had cost his family.

While its possible that Aberforth did do it, and as a kindly gentle man, it seems likely he would have that feeling to do something like that.. simply because Percival was in Azkaban does not mean he could not have commissioned the engraving. This was before the Dementors at Azkaban so one could imagine it as more of a prison we would expect. He would have contact with the outside world, and could have asked that the saying be put on the stone.

Erm … Fr. Roderick, I’m not sure the quote on Kendra and Ariana Dumbledore’s tombstone could have been written by Percival (Kendra’s husband and father of Albus, Aberforth, and Ariana). If you recall from the story, Percival was sent to Azkaban after torturing three Muggles after what they did to six-year old Ariana, which caused her to become mentally unstable. So for a long time, Kendra was a single mother, raising her three children. So Percival would have been well out of the picture by the time Ariana died.

If it weren’t for the timing, your theory would have been quite plausible.

Here’s another thought. Perhaps the quote came from Aberforth, who was more attached to his family than Albus ever was?
