Hello Pinc,
It looks like you have had an interesting journey so far.
We hope you stick around (with Catholics also on the journey) long enough to find God. God is here among us.
One interesting take…the journey is the destination.
As a non-Catholic that converted to Catholicism… I appreciate the Catholic emphasis on good works. “Faith and Deeds”. (James 2:14)
The Pope is also trying to lead the way toward inter-faith dialogue among the World religions. This is no easy task.
I hope to support the Pope in his inter-faith dialogue efforts with a web site that will come on line later this summer called “GoldenRuleNews.Com”. This site will feature podcast news and stories about brother and sisters helping brothers and sisters regardless of socio-economic differences or religious differences. First episode will likely feature something about “Doctors Without Borders”. If you (Pinc) can share stories about good people doing good things that you observed from your Judaic or India studies…I would like to be able to share them on “GoldenRuleNews.Com”.
I also personally appreciate the “Catholic Tradition” that uses the spoken word plus the written word to help us understand what our predecessors want to communicate about what God wants for us. For example, the first time I read Genesis chapter 22, I thought it was some horrific mind game with God testing Abraham. I now understand that chapter as a lesson against the ancient practice of certain sacrifices people used to make for God. Sacrifices God didn’t want.
Both written and spoken forms are important and both try to communicate the message of the inspired word of God. Some of the biblical readings do not always make sense to me from a literal perspective. So it is good to be able to draw from the spoken tradition of people throughout history that devoted their lives to exploring and explaining the meaning of the passages that seem confusing or don’t mesh with our modern understandings.
Some of the traditions, messages, and meanings are shared in electronic resources like those found at SQPN on broadcasts like this one by Joe.
Some of the traditions, messages, and meanings are shared in the weekly services.
Some of the traditions, messages, and meanings are shared with small groups gathering together to collectively explore the meaning. I participate with a weekly “scripture prayer group” that gathers and prays on a small section of the bible each week. I found this group to be extremely helpful for a deeper and richer understanding of the meaning.
I also appreciate that the Pope’s efforts to lead the way on the journey toward discovery of the one truth. For example, the Catholic observatory using telescopes to explore the origins of creation and possible links with the “big bang theory” and/or “evolution”.
Enjoy the rest of your journey Pinc! It should be exciting if you keep exploring with the rest of us Catholics. And remember the challenge from St. Francis – Go preach the word of God, and use words if you need to.
To Pinc:
Be not afraid! Your hesitancy is a normal part of the process. As you learn more about the truths of the Catholic Faith, your conviction will be strengthened. You will see that the truth sets you free and that there is “no place like home”. I recommend The Coming Home network begun by Marcus Grodi, himself a convert (a (former Presbyterian Pastor). His e-mail is Marcus@chnetwork.org or you can contact the Coming Home Network itself at: http://www.chnetwork.org/
Also you can contact:
Chaplain
Fr. Ray Ryland (former Anglican Priest)
FrRyland@chnetwork.org
May God bless you abundantly as your journey continues.
Joe,
So sorry I didn’t meet you at the CNMC. When did this gathering at the hotel take place? Rebecca Christian and I were hoping to take part in something like this but we never knew when it happened!
Great meeting you this weekend, Joe. Deborah posted a recording of the Ustream session we did at this meet-up at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/sqpn-meet-up and I posted my recordings at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/the-accidental-archaeologist (listed as “SQPN Meet up #1 & #2″)
Thanks for organizing that get-together, as it turned out to be the only chance for the Ustream audience to see all the podcasters, bloggers, listeners, and other such people of interest all together in one place…and I’m pretty sure every single person there came up to the camera to introduce themselves!
Fab i finally felt as if i caught up with you how i wish i could be there.
Now you must do a European one for all of us in europe
Pinc,
You might enjoy the RCIA podcasts we’re posting here in Hollywood:
http://rciahollywood.blogspot.com/
It’s a chance to “eavesdrop” on the teaching we provide to writers, actors, producers and directors in Hollywood who are interested in becoming Catholic
