  1. Hi Father Roderick!
Enjoyed #512 and you talking about sardines brought back memories. Growing up, my family was on a very tight budget so we would stock up on cans and cans of sardines and salmon when they were on sale. My mom would prepare the sardines with sliced onions and mix in soy sauce and top it over steamed rice. Delicious! I usually only eat them during lent but maybe I’ll have some for dinner tonight:) We’ll see if the kids will like it!

  2. My work is in SEO (”search engine optimization” - that’s the Google Juice Leo Laporte was talking about) and would be happy to help SQPN with optimizing the site/spreading the love. :-)

  3. Sardine bones are so soft they can be eaten. That’s why sardines are a good source of calcium. You’re being wasteful by removing them.

  4. Great to hear a shout-out from Leo Laporte on the latest Daily Breakfast. Leo knows so many things out there in the world of technology, so the fact that SQPN is the first thing that rolls off his tongue shows how much of an impact you’ve had!

  5. google juice: n.
A hypothetical substance which attracts the index bots of Google.com. In common usage, a web page or web site with high placement in the results of a particular search on Google or frequent placement in the results of a various searches is said to have “a lot of google juice” or “good google juice”. Also used to compare web pages or web sites, for example “CrackMonkey has more google juice than KPMG”. See also juice, kilogoogle.

  6. Ah one of my favourite snacks as a child, sardines in a tomato sauce mashed up (incl the bones), spread on toast with a sliced tomato on top. Then put back under the grill until hot! Mmmmmmmmn

  7. I like sardines too, any yes mostly on Friday’s! However it tends to gross my 7 kids out!. The other thing you mentioned was Herring. I remember as a kids my Dad, who came from the Netherlands use to eat pickled Herring. I like them to and may have them on special occasions such as Christmas. Unfortunately, I eat them alone, (unless my Dad is over) because they also gross my kids and wife out!..Oh well. Keep up the great work!

  8. I listened to this one last night. Perhaps I should try. I have vitamin D and B12 deficiencies. I take extra Vitamin D and a B12 shot every other week. Seems like the little sardine is just a vitamin store :D

  9. You removed the bones?!?!? But they’re the best part!!! I totally agree with Christopher Murray’s comment. Sardine bones are a great source of calcium, and removing them would be oh-so wasteful.

If you don’t like the idea of crunching bones, perhaps you can consider taking them out, crush them, and mix it back in your sardines. Then you get your healthy dose of calcium, without affecting the texture of your sandwich too much. ;)

  10. As an IT instructor I could not resist that the number 512 has not so much to with hexadecimal (of course there is a conenction) but more with the binairy system. which is all about the powers of 2 :-)
    0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 etc. :-)

  11. Great to hear Leo Laporte talk about the Daily Breakfast! I heard Fr. Roderick’s name mentioned in the same sentence as Leo Laporte while at Podcamp Ohio by one of the presenters. Oh and by the way “juice” us over at the Catholic Tech Tips Blog ; )
