Daily Breakfast 521 - The Demise Of Star Wars?
In this show: Portugal and Portugese; Greg and Jennifer’s new Rosary Army office; the New Media Expo and the Catholic New Media Celebration 2009; George Lucas kills Star Wars; Babylon 5: now *that* is what I call Science Fiction; Rustic Pizza.

Pizza! It’s hard not to love Pizza. Here are some of my favorites. First (and most important, though I will refrain from ranking any of these pizzas) is the veggie pizza that my wife, Chris, makes at home for our Friday meat-less fast. She has become such a talented chef. This pizza has goat cheese (feta) with roasted chillis and artichoke hearts among other veggies. Then there’s the three-cheese pizza I had at a cafe in Macon, France. Macon is in central France about 80 km north of Lyon. When I took my first bite of this pizza I said, “Oh my gosh! This is the best pizza I’ve ever had.” And now, of course, I really can’t say this definitively. But we in the USA are not accustomed to such good cheese as the French eat routinely. By far, however, the best restaurant pizza in North America is the Greek pizza at the Outback Pizza in Taos, New Mexico. Taos is a small community in the Sangre de Christo Mountains north of Santa Fe established by the Franciscan missionaries in the 16th century to minister to the native people of Taos Pueblo. Outback Pizza is hard to find, but well worth the effort.
Best wishes to all, including Greg and Jennifer,

Okay Father,
Now that you don’t have the clone wars movie (or tv series either) to look forward to will you take my advice?
Read the Republic Commando novels by Karen Traviss. She wrote very compelling stories that she intended for adults but don’t contain objectionable material for kids. My father loves these books and can’t wait for Order 66. (released in a few weeks)
Just start with Hard Contact (it’s not too long) and take it all in. It is an introduction to a world that has not been deeply delved into-that of the personal lives of clone commandos and their relationships with their Mandalorian training sergeants and Jedi generals.
When I picked up these books it was because I liked the idea of looking at the lives of the clones. The author contrasts the outlook of the soldiers on the battlefield with that of the Jedi. Have you ever wondered about the morality of the Jedi allowing humans to be bred only for battle, with no thought of their lives apart from the war? Or perhaps that the clones have a much shorter lifespan than regular humans? The moral questions abound in these books and I feel they are addressed in a manner that will reinforce what Catholics believe rather than attack our morality as is too common in today’s literature. I would say that respect for life in all stages is a major theme. (yes, also unborn life and the disabled) The theme is not overtly displayed, but if you can find Secrets in the Lord of the Rings, in Star Wars, and in Harry Potter, then you won’t be disappointed.
Star Wars books are generally subpar writing and storywise, so I don’t read something because it has the Star Wars label. This is an exception.
Karen Traviss is a great writer and I think she deserves more attention.
Thank you for all you do Father
God Bless

Hi Father Roderick,
I was wondering if you were thinking of a new site for the 2009 New Media Celebration? I would like to suggest Washington, D.C., as it would be more centralized to more American listeners. The DC area has Catholic University, The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, The Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, and The Franciscan Monastery (Commissariat of the Holy Land) all within walking distance of each other. I would be willing to volunteer my time to help with this endeavor.
God Bless,
John
I attended the 2008 New Media Expo and had a great time. The first two keynotes were great and many of the smaller sessions were good. Some of the smaller sessions were really bad, but overall, I was really impressed with the conference. Enough information about the business side of things, and lots of info to get you inspired.
I would like to propose Vegas as the site of the 2009 CNMC, and piggyback on top of New Media Expo. We could combine everything into one trip. Go to the New Media Expo for the podcast development side of things for Thursday to Saturday, and end the weekend with the Catholic New Media Celebration on Sunday.
Cheap flights to Vegas, fairly cheap hotels, relatively clean entertainment in the evenings (if you look for it).
My vote is for Vegas and I would love to help organize it there.
Hello Father. I’m new in “the town” and I’m loving every single minute of it. My name is Guillermo Eduardo Gabriel-Maisonet, but I go by the nickname Guillo. As Guillermo is William in English, Guillo would be like Bill or Will. I’m a seminarian studying for the Diocese of Tyler in Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, Connecticut.
I also watched The Clone Wars and I approached it as a kids’ movie. In that sense I wasn’t disappointed. But you’re totally right, there’s no deep plot and no nuances in the characters. It was like watching Saturday morning TV cartoons, just the same episode for a long, long, looooong time.
About comfort food, my favorite one is dark chocolate. It works like magic, and there’s never a bad time to have a piece of it. I love how it smells, I love the texture in my hands, I love the crumbling sound when you break a piece of it, the smell revives me, and I love when it’s melting in my mouth. I know that heaven is going to have fountains pouring gallons of thick liquid dark chocolate and mines with glistening rocks of this most delicious gift to humanity. I always say that the sixth day God created man, the seventh he rested and the eigth day he had another great idea: Dark Chocolate.
Unfortunately for me, I cannot have anything higher than 65 % of pure cocoa content. I’ve tried twice 85 % of pure cocoa content dark chocolate and I get an asthma episode. It’s like an allegic reaction. I guess that’s my thorn in the flesh for lusting after chocolate.
Well, that’s all for the moment. Please keep me in your prayers as I go back to seminary this weekend to begin classes on Monday, August 25th.
With Saint Joseph,
Guillo
