Hi, Father.
Greetings from Texas! Hope we don’t get it too bad here (weather).
Kelly
Well, Fr. Roderick, I never knew we had so much in common! To this day, I’m a terrible morning person. Beginning in high school, all through college, and even now – it was much easier for me to stay up late than it was for me to wake up early…, no matter how early I went to bed.
Recently, however, this has become a problem for me. I worked a night shift (3pm-11:30pm) at the TV station where I’m Art Director for the past 11 years. I used to go to the gym after I dropped my children off at school at 9am. Now that I’m working a 9am-5:30pm shift, I can’t seem to find it in me to wake up early enough to get to the gym. I would have to wake up between 5:30am-6am to have time to get to the gym, get home, and get myself and my children ready for school/work and out the door. Unfortunately, I’m still in the habit of doing my work and/or catching up with my TV viewing late at night, after the rest of my family has gone to bed. The only solution I can come up with is to buy an iPod Touch, put all my shows and video podcasts on it, and take it with me to the gym. This is the only way I can see being able to go to bed early enough to wake up at that hour – aside from (gasp!) cutting out my TV viewing altogether!
And if that wasn’t enough…,
I too was a gymnast – for most of my life. I started in 3rd grade and continued right through college. I totally understand what you mean when you say that kids made fun of you for doing a “girlie” sport…, real men don’t wear leotards, right.
Well, to those people I say this – gymnastics paid for my entire 4-year education at Syracuse University and while I was competing, put me in the best physical condition a person can be in. The lessons I learned, the discipline it taught me, and the friends I made are what molded me into the person I am today. I am eternally grateful for the sport and the opportunities and experience it allowed me to have.
I have a personal blog where I write about being a stay-at-home dad. (If you recall, I posted all those videos of Indiana Jones being filmed when crews were in New Haven, CT.) In August, during the Olympic Games, I dug up some old VHS tapes of my college years and posted a series of videos reliving my glory days at S.U., including a clip of me as a high school junior winning 8 gold medals at the Empire State Games…, long before Michael Phelps won his gold medals. Purely an ego stroke, but if you’re interested you can check them out here. Start with the August 9th entry and run through the week.
Who knows where you would be today if you had stuck with the sport…, Captain Jeff might be working on the “I Flip for Jesus” t-shirts?!
Thanks for sharing with us your morning rituals, Fr Roderick. I agree with you absolutely. Waking up early in the morning feels really wonderful! The peace and quiet, and the sense of having done so much so early in the day.
For the past year, I’ve been waking up around 6am. I would wash up and walk quickly (about 20 minutes) down the road to a church nearby to attend mass. After that, will spend some time in the adoration room, then walk back home (another 20 minutes) to start working for the day.
By the way, could we call using Google Talk (instead of a number, which might incur costs) to leave a voice message for you?
Fr. Roderick,
I listened to your “morning rituals” podcast with great interest, since I am not a morning person and since I also enjoy good coffee in the morning.
I laughed out loud when you mentioned that you thought Starbucks tasted somewhat over-roasted; in America, critics of Starbucks (and they are many) call it “Char-bucks”, because the coffee tastes charred, that is, burnt.
May I recommend a different coffee? There’s a group of Carmelite Monks in Wyoming who support themselves by roasting and selling coffee. You can get info at http://www.mysticmonkcoffee.com. I’ve found their coffee to be superior to Starbucks or Caribou or anything else in the US. I don’t know how much it would be to ship to Holland, but I could probably send you some cheaply, or you could pick some up next time you are in the US.
Fr. Roderick,
In your Peculiar Bunch “Saints and Sinners” segment, I think you were trying to remember 1 John 1:8 or 1 John 1:10.
“… you mentioned that you thought Starbucks tasted somewhat over-roasted;” — really ? when did you have a change of taste ? I remember your trip to NY and your want and search for Starbucks.
I was just listening to the Sept. 8th podcast from NPR’s (National Public Radio) Fresh Air. The host was interviewing one of your favorite writer/directors, JJ Abrams, who has now created a tv drama series “The Fringe”, about an secret agency doing weird science. You can download their podcast for free through iTunes. I agree with your Starbucks coffee review, however, I do like their lattes. A big part of the draw to Starbucks is being able to talk the talk and use the vocabulary people have invented to order their very specific drinks. I usually have a “why bother”: skim milk, decaffeinated coffee and artificial sweetener…Love what you are doing!
I am not a morning person. I use to live 5 minutes from my office and now I live 30-40 minutes away. The main changes I’ve made is to pray my morning prayer first thing before turning on the TV for the news. My alarm goes off around 6AM. I snooze til around 6:30. I have trouble going to bed at night. In fact, it is 10:40P now and I should be preparing for night prayer and bed now.
I can say I have superior single cup coffee brewing in my Keurig coffee machine. Their web site says keurig is a Dutch word meaning “excellence.” I enjoy a cup of coffee with my morning prayer. Today I had a fruit smoothie.
