Blessings and thanks for your gentle reminder that the Church is the final arbiter in matters of faith and morals. In fact, that is why I said that the Church hasn't taken a position on Medjugorje and that we are not called to accept it. But I don't believe that means we can't talk about these matters. You probably have heard that tens of thousands have gone there -- and that many lives have been positively changed. One priest who has been there several times told me that the Confessions he has heard there are the most profound and sincere that he has ever experienced. So good fruits are coming forth. The Church's "jury" is still out, and so we should also "wait and see." I understand and know that there are many people whose faith has been renewed by going there. But holy, well-intentioned people can make mistakes. And God renews the faith of those who seek Him, whether they are at an apparition site, or not. Will some of those people devoted to the Medjugorje apparitions become rebellious if the apparitions are not approved? I think they may, and I think the history of apparitions untimately NOT approved bears that out. Private devotion to apparitions still under consideration is a private matter. But people who are clergy, leaders, or teachers should be especially careful to separate their private devotion from their public ministry.
