Thanks for the movie recommendation - I just finished watching The Orphanage and Katherine was so right. This movie is intelligent and scary without being gruesome.
“we shouldn’t be liturgy nazis “– I was going to listen to this podcast but because of this comment I think I will pass. The comment implie one thing — if there are people around that have an understanding on why things are done in a certain way and are being articulate in making sure that the beauty of the Liturgy as directed by Rome is maintained, well, I think I pass on the whinning on why things should be done spontaneously and any which way .
On being the liturgy police:
Fine point on intinction. According to Catholic Answers, the priest can’t “hand it to you” after intinction; the Host MUST be placed on the tongue.
EVERYONE should read Michael Dubruiel’s How to Get the Most Out of the Eucharist http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/62338250 This book really toned down my criticism of poor liturgy by focusing on my own interior preparation. I WILL walk out of a Mass that is flat-out invalid, but I no longer let an adlib or a theologically iffy song ruin receiving JESUS. Well, hardly ever. But I’m MUCH better. That doesn’t mean I’ve stopped caring, but that I can calmly deal with the problem outside of Mass.
Oh, and @Joe? If you’d LISTENED, you might have found Mac and Katherine agree with you more than you prejudged them to do.
well then, maybe I will, after my dose of the Daily Breakfast ! thanks.
Dear Joe,
It’s a term I in my voice feedback message because I think it was a proper term to describe my situation. Please listen to their take and find that you agree with them.
On the whole intinction thing. The thing that bothered me is that a girl asked the priest before Mass if she could hold the ‘cup with wine’ during the Eucharist. The priest thought that it was fine. Then during Mass she held it in such a way that people could dip the host they just received from the priest in the Blood of Christ (which they called ‘wine’). So I was supposed to take the Blood of Christ myself. I just don’t do that. I don’t have a problem with intinction if it’s done properly and with reverence.
After Mass I learned people were advocating female ‘priests’ and were angry that a lot of female pastoral workers were ‘passed’ by young priests, who just left seminary. That and the Mass made me feel completely out of place and lost. I didn’t want to become angry, so I left very quickly in order to avoid doing things I would regret later. So that’s the whole story.
Inge - sounds like that particular parish was not for you. Though you may want to write a letter to the bishop. What is going on there is not right, and others may be scandalized who have less love and respect for the body of Christ than you do.
Thanks for the comments guys! And for sticking up for us.
Joe - I hope that you will let us know what you think after you hear the podcast - all opinions are welcome.
Katherine
It was a wonderful episode. The real presence is the first thing that brought me to the Catholic Church. I wrote about it in my blog. This was my take on it http://stfrancisgirl.wordpress.com/2008/07/13/the-real-meal-deal-why-i-am-catholic/
ok, I’m back and listening — looks like there was way too much liberty taken with the improper practice of intinction with Inge. Are you in the Archdiocese of Atlanta ? Any type of Lirurgical abuse ought to be bought to the attention of the pastor and the Bishop of the Diocese( as well as Fr. Theodore Book). There is an absolute need for those ( of us)who pay attention to Liturgical MalPractice and abuse and report it appropriately. (BTW — its and Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist — not Eucharistic Minister). These things cant be just passed over. Also — Do your research on Letter and Spirit of the LAW — it has noting to do with liturgical practice -Jesus respected and practiced in an appropriate manner all the rituals of Judeaism. Its a gabbag excuse fo r not wanting to do what is prescibed for proper liturgy.
While I agree with you, Joe, that the issue of intinction in that parish needs to be addressed, I think that it should first be done at the parish level. I don’t think the bishop needs to be involved from the start.
Whenever I see abuse occur anywhere (not just in liturgy… I’m also thinking of things like the YouTube host desecration) that even if speaking up doesn’t seem to yield the results I would like, I remind myself that (for lack of a better way to express it) that Jesus is a big boy and probably doesn’t need my help. If you really trust that God will deal with everyone in His own time, it brings a person a sense of peace even in the face of abuse or disrespect.
Of course, one should never be afraid to speak up, but just trust in God to deal with it once you do.
