  1. What practical steps can actually be accomplished?

While many Christians disagree on the legal questions surrounding abortion, together we can and must pursue practical steps that actually reduce abortion rates. Three-fourths of women who have an abortion say a primary reason is that they cannot afford to raise a child, so reducing poverty and supporting low-income women is a good place to start.

Recent research affirms that social and economic support for women and vulnerable families are effective solutions to lowering the abortion rate, including greater access to health care, poverty reduction, adoption reform, and pre and postnatal care.

We must look forward to the day when both poverty reduction and abortion reduction are nonpartisan issues and bipartisan causes.

May God bless us all with love and compassion for all,
    Michael C

  2. What is the meaning of “life”?

For too long abortion was seen as the only “life” issue in our culture and politics, but there is a growing conviction among Christians that poverty, disease, war, the health-care crisis, human trafficking, the death penalty, nuclear weapons, environment, the economy, social justice and the worldwide deaths of 30,000 children every day from preventable causes are also key life issues.

I pray that most of us will come to emphasize “all” the important pro- “life” issues that go along with a holistic consistant wide spectrum ethic of life and not just one single issue as we have learned from Jesus’s teachings.

May God bless us all with love and compassion for all,
    Michael C

  3. its a shame that adoption isnt being talked about for an “alternative” to abortion.

  4. “Three-fourths of women who have an abortion say a primary reason is that they cannot afford to raise a child, so reducing poverty and supporting low-income women is a good place to start.”

This is the same as saying, “75% of men commit murder because they are hungry, so the first thing we need to do is give them food.” WHAT?!

Where does that statistic come from? How reliable is it? I’ll bet if Dave Ramsey looked at their finances, that most of them COULD afford to raise a(nother) child.

I am pro-choice. I am in favor of a woman’s right to choose. To choose whether or not to engage in sexual relations, that is. Once that decision has been made, and pregnancy results, it is no longer a choice, but a child.

  5. Wow, that really touched me. Yesterday was a really bad for me emotionally, but this podcast helped. I work for the book publisher of the Dummies books so from the begining this podcast had my attention. Then I heard the song The Greatest Day, on a day that was a struggle for me. It was as if I was being told to listen. The song was so beautiful I cried. Which helped me release some of the emotions and feel better. I have to buy that CD.

  6. “Three-fourths of women who have an abortion say a primary reason is that they cannot afford to raise a child, so reducing poverty and supporting low-income women is a good place to start.”

Poverty can not be used as a justification for an abortion. There are impoverished countries all over the world in which families would very much want more children. Children in such places have intrinsic value because they can grow into productive members of the family and will expand the family’s ability to earn income. It is only in the the richest countries that additional children are considered a financial ‘burden’.

  7. @ Michael C., Yes! Michael, many Christians walk, pray and keep vigil at the abortion agencies, and help those who might enter the building without knowledge of the available options. That is a sure way to help if you are interested. There is a such a group in most Churches.

I understand your concern and your points about counteracting abortion, however, supportive services are available NOW as we email. The KEY is to get the info to the person. It is all too easy to get an abortion where the options are not offered to the person in trouble. I’ve been there with young women/young men as a social worker.

I’ve had too careers: social work and animation film. As a social worker I find that the young women are confused, scared, unable to see a “way out”. Options are not clear to them BUT when they are shown options, i.e., the seriousness of the act of abortion, the ways to get funding, medical coverage, education and/or job training, individual/family/marriage counseling, spiritual guidance, child care, security and even help in future planning while in homes (small and large) for pregnant girls (if their family is not supportive or is unable to provide a home), they breathe a sigh of relief and bite the bullet and go on with life. Adoption is the answer to many of these situations and the adoption resources are extensive. It does take effort to explore the options out there. It’s really not as easy as getting an abortion these days. There are also numerous groups helping/counseling those who didn’t get the resource info, or ignored it, and had the abortion. Just look on the net. You’ll be surprised.

Family, Michael, is often the most helpful although the instances of rejection make the “news” and then that appears to be the norm. But families come forward, even distant relatives, to help out, even by taking the newborn to raise in their own family. Family support is the rule, not the exception.

In one family, one of the members kept having “unwanted” children, one after another, and the family members tried to stop this problem but to no avail, sooooo, they had regular meetings and took all the children, one by one, into their different homes and raised them…some adopted, some got legal guardianships, others just raised them as one of the family. In some cases, these families were also able to get financial help through the laws regarding adoption and legal guardianship. When there was trouble with the babies as they grew, (some babies were “drug-exposed”), they all pitched in to help. This is an exceptional family but the rallying of the family happens more than anyone knows because it is not publicized.

The government needs not try to be a caregiver for the little ones. The current resources help the young mothers/fathers to be self-sufficient, or help to give the gift of life to other responsible, loving people.

To me, the ease of getting an abortion without getting the options is the REAL problem. BUT THE REALLY REAL PROBLEM is often within the families (or lack of families) where the youth are not being taught the challenge of chasity, the dignity of life, sacredness of marriage, and all of those foundational elements of healthy, joyful living. Yes, it still happens in those joyful families, but the risk is lower and the support is usually there.

And everything on earth is a life issue, really. But the foundation needs to be fixed. It’s crumbling. Fix what you can, Michael, which at this present time is to stop the killing of unborn/born babies. That is fundamental, foundational. We must start in our own home, our own stomping ground. Everything at once is overwhelming and unreachable. Do what is at hand. Go from there. Your attitude is forward-reaching to a greater world for us all. Thank you for that. Those thoughts need to be out there in the universe. The actions need to be there too. I’m praying the same prayers.

  8. Fr Roderick,
One of my favorite shows is “America’s Test Kitchen” on our public broadcasting station. We’ve bought their cookbooks and dvds for the past few years.
    Go to http://americastestkitchen.com/
Click on Recipes on the left
Then click on Soups and Stews
The recipes from the current season are accessible once you’ve registered with an email address. (I’ve set up a special email just for these occasions)

A quick question for the Peculiar Bunch: Is it OK to dvr programs and archive them on a hard drive or even to share with friends or is that pirating as well?

Playing catch-up with some old episodes! The song by Eddie from Ohio was amazing and I really enjoyed the small world feedback from one of your listeners. And since you were wondering, Puget is pronounced “pew”-”jet” for Puget Sound :). When you look at the state of Washington on a map, you see there’s a peninsula in the west and a large inlet between it and the rest of the state…that inlet is Puget Sound, and Seattle sits on the Eastern shore of it!
