Hi father roderick,
My name is Chelsa McDougall from Canada.I just finshed listing to your podcast called “Bubble bath”.I was amazied about all the knowlege you have about purgatory. The idea is so cool but its still seems like a giant bathtub to me,and well i rather have puragory then hell. At least, purgatory isnt forever.

The truth is: Bubble baths only remove superficial dirt. To remove deep-down stains, a scrubbing brush is required–the deeper the stains, the more abrasive the brush needed.
We cling to many sins more than we cling to God–otherwise, we would all be saints. Separating ourselves from these sins will be a painful process.
here’s the Bioshock music list if anyone’s interested in more music of the genre Father was describing: http://majornelson.com/archive/2007/10/11/bioshock-music-list.aspx
I would be hesitant to take a “bubble bath” explanation of Purgatory over the fiery alternative. Not knowing the original context of the “bubble bath” comment I will only say that we water down things of the faith at our peril.
I mentioned the “Bubble Bath”, and I want to add to this to it, after hearing Fr. Roderick’s comments…
First, I just put the idea out there as a thought…
Second, a bubble bath is a great thing… for an adult… but since we will hopefully come to the Lord as “little children”, I would say that a bubble bath is not a fun thing to a child. What I mean is that when I was growing up a bath was a chore and was to be resisted.
My Mother had to clean my ears, wash my hair and it was not an easy thing to get done.
I have no problem with the whole notion of explaining it by using the analogy of “fire”, but a person in Purgatory would certainly have the knowledge that heaven was within sight, so fire sounds a bit harsh…
Finally, the idea has been put forward that Purgatory is simply that knowledge at death that we’ve been a real jerk and that we wonder for just at that moment of death, how or why we could have ever rejected the love of God. Our guilt is the cleansing Then… that’s it… On to our heavenly reward.
Food for thought…
