Hi Father! Glad to see the DB back! As a “Hoosier” myself, I just wanted to thank Jim in Columbus for the plug for the movie. It is a great movie, but you almost have to live here to get an idea of just how much basketball means in Indiana. Unfortunately, one of Ohio State’s rivals, the Indiana University “Hoosiers” had a horrible record this year. But who really cares in the final analysis.
A “Hoosier” is the nickname for anyone from Indiana. There are a lot of “fairy tales” about the meaning of the word, but suffice it to say, Hoosiers are good people with midwestern values.
One more thing… If you ever saw the movie “Breaking Away” that was too was an Indiana based story (and filmed at Indiana University). Another great story.
Finally, there is a “Hoosier” team in the NCAA tournament. The Purdue University “Boilermakers” one of IU’s great rivals. They too are “Hoosiers” and have a great team this year…
Father, I am glad you are back, we know you are very busy and I for one appreciate all that you do for us. Please take care of yourself! Also, Hoosiers is a gresat movie try to watch it if you can.
What a classic photo. I never noticed the shiney gold uniforms when I watched the movie … but they definitely get your attention in the photo with a much younger Gene Hackman.
I’ll second the Breaking Away movie for people that enjoy stories about people transitioning from high school to college life.
And one last thing … 1986 is an older movie … but I believe Star Wars may even be older.
OK Purdue “Boiler Makers” … I get the origin of “Boiler Makers” and the steam engine for trains. But I still don’t get the origin of the team name “Hoosier”?
Is there a history with the name?
My understanding was “Hoosier” was from the construction of a canal in Louisville, KY. More here @ Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoosier
Only Catholic schools still remaining in NCAA Sweet 16 are Villanova & Gonzaga.
Peace!
Well, Barbara, perhaps so, but like Home Simpson said when asked by Bart about an article in WikiPedia, he said, “Don’t worry about that, we’ll change that later…!!” Actually, thanks for the input…
I refer to two scholarly places – Indiana University itself, and an article by a Reference Librarian:

Then, an article that appeared in the Indiana Historical Society’s magazine, “Traces”, which you can read at:

It is funny to hear people talk about 1986 as being so long ago… Another great movie that came out that year was “The Mission” with Robert deNiro and Jeremy Irons.
cheers!
