Ludwig,

You are so correct! I apologize profusely . . we have so few American-born saints that we are always anxious to declare those who worked and lived in America (St. John Neumann, Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos) American saints, even though they were born elsewhere.

It is also true that he was voted 'the greatest Belgian' of all times, De Grootste Belg, in a poll by the Flemish Broadcasting system. How wonderful for Belgium! I wish I could visit his tomb someday.

Stay tuned for a great interview about Fr. Damien with the Bishop of Honolulu, His Excellency Bishop Larry Silva on the next SaintCast.

Paul, thank you so much for all your great shows on the saints and related topics! I have learnt so much and the SaintCast helps me grow in my faith (though much is still to be done :-) )
However, let me correct you on one thing. Speaking about Fr. Damiaan De Veuster, you called him 'a new American saint'. Well, of course he lived and worked in the state of Hawaii for a long time, but let me be for once a bit chauvenistic as a Belgian... Jozef De Veuster is a fellow Belgian of mine, and thus NOT a merely American saint, huh? Some days ago I was in the city of Leuven (Belgium) where I visited his tomb, in the crypt of his Order's church. It's so nice and quiet there, away from the bustling city. Some years ago, Fr. Damiaan was elected as 'the greatest Belgian' of all times and I still recall the visit of Pope JPII on the occasion of his beatification. Next October, Pope Benedict will finally canonize him, A beautiful quote of his is inscripted in Fr. Damiaan's tomb: "I find my greatest joy in serving our Lord in his poor and sich children, who are rejected by the other people".
God boess you, Paul, and keep up the great work!
