I’m sorry you had to experience that on what was supposed to be a vacation. I’m just glad that you are back home safe and sound. I hope that doesn’t deter you from going to new places in the future. There is so much of God’s world out there that is beautiful.
Anyway, Happy Easter!
I’m raised Catholic, but still I learned a lot of the extensive talk you did on Holy Week. I recognized a lot, but learning the deeper meaning of it all, makes it worth wile listening to this DB, even as a Catholic.
Zalig Pasen! (Happy Easter)
Last year you did a series on the beautiful Exsultet, please record your Latin version as you did it last year and post it on youtube. I was searching for a good version but didn’t find one as fine as yours sung in the acoustics of your parish. The Catholic Family did an excellent explanation on this night.
May you find rest after your Holy Week services.
Thank you for your great sacrifices for the people you shepherd.
Hi, Fr. R.-
Yes! Please! I second the motion (see Alisa K’s post)! If you can find any time at all, please sing for us! It sounds so beautiful and makes one feel so peaceful!
Re: Greece:
Although many of your listeners would realize that you wouldn’t spend SQPN money for personal use, it was good that you explained everything so newer or unsure listeners would understand that.
I remember last year’s giving campaign and someone wanted to know the SQPN budget/spending plan and while I thought it was a good idea to publish it- as I think whenever money is asked for by the church or a charity, transparency is so important; I had to chuckle as I thought to myself “I just can’t see Fr. Roderick as a big embezzlement risk, the guy doesn’t even have a car!”
Seriously, though, it is good to reassure people that their money is going to something honest and worthwhile, especially in these difficult economic times.
Hope you had a HAPPY EASTER! Have a great week and I hope the pig turns all pink very soon!

I’m planning a trip to Germany this summer and read about just such a scam in one of the travel books. I guess priests have to be more trusting, but I’d never join anyone for a drink unless I knew them or the bar we were going to.
Also, on your fund drive. It might help if you told us what your salary at SQPN is versus how much you are making in your reduced capacity with your diocese. I know priests don’t make much and I think if everyone realized that you aren’t making any more than you would if you weren’t doing SQPN it would put some of those criticisms to rest.
I think the worker is worth his wage. And I’ve already made my contribution.
Hopefully, when Mrs. Vonhogen saw her little boy at Easter, she reminded him never to go wandering off with friendly strangers!
It could have been much worse.
Your story was both funny and very sad. I think that you quoted Bergson at the end of the podcast….I remember that his protege Pirandello wrote a book called “On Humor,” which talks about the deep sadness that is inherent in some seemingly humorous situations.
Father, Please promise us that you will listen more closely to those feelings of misgiving! I am praising God for your compassion. I am also grateful that drink wasn’t drugged.
Anyone know what’s happening? Fr. Roderick’s Twitter Feed stopped on April 13th and there’s been no new shows… ????
He’s abroad in Paris (France) together with Archy_sailor and dislp38
Well, at least we know who he is with this time…
That was such a scary story. Your guardian angel was certainly on duty and you were able to walk away. Hopefully Euro Disney has proved less menacing.
You have my sympathies on your situation in that dive, Fr. R. I once stopped at a Stop sign and a prostitute jumped into the passenger seat. I can’t remember how many times I had to say “NO THANK YOU!” before she would get out.
I hope you survived your busy Easter and are enjoying €-Disney.
Happy Easter Father!
So glad you shared that terrible story of your experience in Greece because now we can pray for the girl to be converted/resurrected out of her dark world. Prayers are really powerful and I hope some day a transformed lady will come up to you and say that she was that girl in that horrid place in Greece. I’ve heard of many things like that happening. Let’s pray! (Not sure about Johnny, hahaha, only kidding, I’m certainly praying for that dude too!)
I am highly disappointed in people who expect their priests and religious, who are already making a far greater devotion to God than themselves, to experience no joy in their lives. Father Roderick has savings and the ability to travel because he lives very frugally in his personal life. Why shouldn’t he have a little fun when he devotes his life to the service of God in ways that the rest of us couldn’t even dream of! I happily contribute to SQPN and would love to send more than I do.
Father,
I am very confident SQPN is good a steward of the funding. You have given us more information on the spending of SQPN than the US Congress gave for the bailout for 1 zillion dollars.
As a knight of Columbus I will always stand in solidarity with our priests, BTW have you ever thought of moving to the US. We would love to have you in our parish.
Dear Father Roderick,l
Happy Easter and Happy Divine Mercy Sunday,
Thank you for the lovely summary of Holy Week. I’m sorry your adventures in Athens got off to such a harrowing start. The really messed up part of this is how the man inveigled you into this situation. At least in Amsterdam, the prostitution is limited to a certain region, which you can avoid. Here, you just didn’t know what you were getting into. I’m really glad you got out without being robbed or worse.
I hope to hear some happier accounts from you soon!
So, is father on vacation or is he just refusing another DB until the fundraising goal is met? If somebody has it to spare, write him a check for 24 grand so we can have the DB back!
It is a pain to read some of the comments recently. It really is.
All those podcasts are for free, nobody has to pay anything. Of course, there are costs that have to be covered. And so, if you are able to do so, you should donate, what you think is the right amount. If this all was about money, this whole website and no podcasts would ever have been created in the first place. And if you think, you should not donate anything, then do not and be quiet already…
