As it happens, I took my children to our local art museum today. Of its three floors, the first two exclusively held modern, abstract art. These works largely struck me and my children as superficial and reflecting no particular skills or messages that we could discern.

Prof. Healy does a wonderful job of describing how art can and should connect to a deeper meaning and reality which can be religious. She has developed a deeper truth about modern art - that it denies the spiritual and the imaginative. It embodies an implied philosophy that all that exists is material reality and sensation.

This discussion put into very cogent and lucidly expressed ideas some feelings and impressions I have also had about the meaning and function of art. I hope Prof. Healy develops her ideas about art in further writings. I think it will find a wide and receptive audience.

Hello Fr. Seraphim and Prof. Jennifer!

I enjoyed your episode of introducing Catholic art and some of the basic explanations.

If you two are ever on one of the trips with the students traveling through Europe and have an opportunity to discuss a particular piece of art and/or museum, I would be interested in hearing about it and your impressions of what it may say to us as Catholics and what it may say to us about the artist(s) and their history/message.
