In a few years time, I’ve evolved from seasoned couch potato into a ‘Marathon man’. In this episode I share with you my experiences during my very first Marathon  on the feast of Corpus Christi in Amersfoort, the Netherlands.Link:

  1. Wow, what a difference! You look great Fr. R.

  2. Looks great

    just bought P90x…
I need to do something now that I am 42…. I have two kids.. want to make it to 92 and be healthy enough to keep up my grandkids and possibly great grandkinds

  3. You even look younger !!! Great Job !

  4. You are looking great Father Roderick. Always thankful for your inspiration. Always great to have another episode of Healthy Catholic. Listening now!

  5. Fr. R. – job well done with the marathon! Always amazing to me the new ways you find to inspire and connect with people. Now you can start running marathons for fund raisers.

  6. Congratulations on your achievement! And thank you for sharing your experiences along the long hard road, you’re such an inspiration, Father! May Our Dear Lord always keep you healthy and fit and ever ready to work for Him in building The Kingdom!

  7. Hope the Marathon was a good experience even in adversity the Marathon reach to the true character; it is a complete learning experience. Excellent spiritual exercise too. God bless you and the SQPN effort.

  8. Congratulations father Roderick,
This achievement makes me think that I also can do it. Thank you for sharing this experience with us.

    I’m very proud of you
    :-)

  9. I think BOTH photos are wonderful! You’re smiling in the “Before” one . . .

  10. Congratulations, but … you were in the wrong procession … Just kidding! ;) (I’m sorry for the crappy translation of the article, but fortunately the pictures are clear enough :) )

  11. Right … I inserted the wrong link … :S :D Please follow the link at the left to “A large and a small procession”

  12. Congratulations on your wonderful achievement! As I listened to your description of your sound track and what music/podcasts came on at what times, I recognized the work of the Holy Spirit – especially when you said Catholic in a Small Town came on as you entered the harbor. Isn’t it wonderful when God’s plan comes together?

  13. Good heavens, you ran 8’s and sub-8’s at the END of the marathon, after having to deal with the realization that you had further to go than you thought??? You will definitely run sub-4:00 in your next marathon. No doubt about it.

Instead of Gu, maybe check out Clif Shot Bloks (if you can get them where you are, I don’t know what’s available in Europe). They are gummy squares. I like them a lot better than gels. The Cran-Razz flavor is my personal favorite.

I loved your post-race chat and hearing how excited you were about the whole experience. Glad to hear you never hit the wall and had a wonderful time. That’s the best kind of marathon there is! Your finish line pictures look great.

Your whole description makes me want to run Amersfoort! It sounds so refreshing to have a city all turned out cheering the runners on, unlike many of the races I’ve done here where there are virtually no spectators, but many lines of cars stopped at intersections honking and yelling at you because you’re blocking their way.

    Congratulations, again! You’re a MARATHONER!

  14. Thank-you for your story! I got to listen to it during a portion of my day where I needed a dose of optimism. Again, thank-you!

  15. Just listened to your HC 10 and heard the marathon story, it really was a fantastic day! I run 5k myself in Amersfoort and in the afternoon watched the marathon at 36 km. I must have cheered you on because I was very enthusiastic about the event and proud of our city.
Hopefully next year we will have this event again, I will be training for a longer distance.

  16. Thank you for all the inspiration Fr. Roderick. Since I started listening to this show and your Daily Breakfast I’ve finally started exercising again. Currently I am about 20lbs overweight. I’ve bought tons of exercise videos always planning to make them a part of my daily routine but I always seem to fall flat after a few tries. Your show keeps me going knowing that you too are struggling to become a healthy Catholic. Congrats on running the marathon. I hope to be as fit as you are someday.

  17. Wow! I just got back from vacation and listened to the Healthy Catholic #10! Congratulations on your first marathon! You are inspiring me! I’ve started running/walking and tracking my calories! I’m going to have to listen to this podcast again!
Thanks for sharing your story! God bless you Fr. Roderick!
Oh, the marathon pictures are proof – you were smiling all the way!
