  1. Fr R. I’ve recently (within the last couple of years) become a big fan of Stargate. You’re right in that some of these scifi series tend to look all alike.

Stargate Universe, the new one, seems to me to be a bit too dark. These average people (in itself is a new thing) are stuck in this barge of a spaceship with no possible means of sustaining themselves. The thing is falling apart. I kept saying to myself: what’s the point? Just kill everyone off already, take them out of their misery. We’ll have to see how all this plays out.

I’ll be doing a podcast on Stargate SG1 within the next 10 episodes. So keep watch.

  2. Hi Father Roderick, Thankyou for visiting Australia & NZ. Good luck for your TV show and I hope you find a name for your mascot.
    I found a parenting site (http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/my-favorite-names.html)
with Maori baby names and can suggest a few:
    Ahurewa- sacred place
Ihapera- my god is a vow
    Heni- God is gracious
Irirangi – spirit voice (now it means radio & TV waves)
Tui- actually a honeyeater bird reputed for its beauty, intelligence and song.
I left voice feedback but I am not sure about the pronounciation or the sound.

Have you seen the movie “Whale Rider” ?, it is a NZ film and I can recommend it.

  3. Stargate Universe episode 1 has expired in the US on Hulu but is available as a free download on iTunes.

  4. Fr. Rod, I loved your show today! You really do have to catch up on the Stargates! haha SG-1’s good, but Atlantis and SG·U (so far) are way better, I think.

  5. To accompany your words on Hell, the devil, etc. Fr. Robert Barron, from http://wordonfire.org/#yt_video or, on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8zhnooySk4

You might also be interested in his comments on St. Therese and the angels… http://wordonfire.org/#yt_video

  6. Hi, Father.

I didn’t like the Stargate movie either. Not at all… but I’ll try to watch the TV series.

Why not Wiiki for the kiwi mascot…? It sounds geeky :)

  7. I am a fan of Stargate SG1. The key is that you shouldn’t really compare it to shows like BSG or Star Trek. SG1 is almost as much a comedy show as it is a sci-fi show.

  8. I was just about to point out Robert Barron’s video on hell as well, but it looks like Michael beat me to the punch.

I’m incredibly into sci fi, and although i’ve seen every SG1 and SG Atlantis episode, the stories and characters are never as good as star trek. Plus they always violate star trek’s prime directive and make huge messes out of everything, which is incredibly frustrating to a trekkie like me.

  9. Hi all,

I’m listening to this episode right now….

I was interested to hear Fr. Roderick’s “rant” about the lack of “devil-acknowledgment.” I think it was C.S. Lewis in his “Screwtape Letters” who pointed out that the greatest accomplishment of the devil in the past century is that he has convinced most of our society that he doesn’t exist. How could Jesus have been tempted by the devil if he didn’t exist? And for those who would say that believing in the devil gives people an excuse for their actions, (ie. “the devil made me do it”) – well, it’s all about temptation, right? God leads us to good choices, the devil leads us to bad choices – that’s the whole point of free choice. The point is, we choose.

(Doh – Fr. Roderick just made this exact same point as I wrote this! :-) )
