    Review: CatholicTV’s WOW Challenge

Are you ready to take the WOW CatholicTV Challenge? WOW: The Catholic TV Challenge is a fun Catholic game show for children featuring 3rd graders answering questions about Catholic life. You can watch it streaming directly from the CatholicTV website.

The 28-minute show hosted by Fr. Robert Reed is broken into short segments with teams of different contestants.  Perfect for limited attention spans, Father Reed engages the kids with energy, enthusiasm and just enough humor to make it fun.  In between the questions and answers, Fr. Reed takes a brief moment to tell you something about the most recent question or answer while keeping the action moving right along.

Each show has a topic with questions flowing in a natural order.  We started watching with the show on “Christmas” and moved to “Growing Up Catholic.” Their posted schedule also includes shows about Easter, Sacramentals, The Holy Rosary, The Blessed Mother, The People of God and more.

CatholicTV has taken all the elements that make a game show entertaining and mixed it with interactive stuff kids like to create a fun program the whole family will enjoy.  When a contestant gets a question right, the underage audience says “WOW!”   While I found it a bit cheesy, my kids loved it and were soon saying “WOW” right along with the show.  My three kids, ages 9, 7 and 4 were amazed at how quickly the children hit their buzzers and answered the questions correctly.  They found it fun to watch other kids compete on a reality show and now mine desperately want to be on it.

CatholicTV is a nationally broadcast television network streaming a live feed 24 hours a day at http://www.CatholicTV.com.  If you do not receive CatholicTV from your local cable provider, visit CatholicTV Everywhere to help them grow, and then watch their programming directly online at CatholicTV.

WOW is lots of fun!  And it’s an entertaining show for our kids about our Catholic faith!  What a great combination.

Do you know more about the Catholic faith than a Catholic 3rd grader?

    Catholic Insider Goes To Spain

Fr. Roderick is back with a series of new episodes of the Catholic Insider. This time, he explores the cultural and religious past of cities like Córdoba and Granada in the south of Spain.

The Catholic Insider was one of the first Catholic podcasts in the world. In 2005, Fr. Roderick recorded the events surrounding the death of blessed pope John Paul II and the subsequent election of cardinal Ratzinger as pope Benedict XVI.

The Catholic Insider series continued with audio tours of places in Ireland, France, Greece and other countries, and gathered an audience of tens of thousands of listeners.

The new Spanish episodes explore the Catholic history of Spain, the centuries of Islamic rule and the following reconquest of Spain and its impact on art, music, architecture and faith in this south European country.

I am so excited to have found this podcast.u00a0 I love the show, Babylon 5, and have watched the whole series a few times.u00a0 However, it has been a few years since I have sat down and watched any of the episodes.u00a0 So being able to catch this podcast at the beginning, I have decided to rewatch the episodes the same week you will be discussing them.nThe last podcast I have listen to is the one in which you discuss Survivors and By Any Means Necessary.u00a0 I like these episodesu00a0mostly because, at the time they first aired, you did not see theseu00a0kind of stories or conflictsu00a0in a regular Sci-fi show.u00a0 Things likeu00a0characters can actually have human problems like alcoholism, or that the station can have labor issues.u00a0 I like seeing these day to day problems of running this “airport hotel” in space.nu00a0I can’t wait to hear your comments on the episode Signs and Portents.u00a0 This is where I feel the show actually starts its overall arc.u00a0 The seeds planted in this episode will echo throughout the series.

Wow, it’s so interesting that you guys seemed to like “Infection” and “Soul Hunter” too. u00a0You’re right that “Infection” is considered one of the worst episodes. u00a0My least favorite episode used to be “Believers,” which you’ll be getting to soon. u00a0But, on a recent re-watch, in which I’ve been re-grading every episode, I came to realize that “Soul Hunter” is now my least favorite episode, “Infection” is 2nd least, and “Believers” is now only my 3rd least favorite.nnPart of the reason “Infection” was so rough is that it was the very first episode produced despite being the fourth aired. u00a0The production order of the entire first season is greatly scrambled. u00a0In fact, the season finale was the 22nd episode aired but the 12th produced. u00a0Check out the Production Code column on the table on this Wikipedia page for more: u00a0http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylon_5_episodesnnOddly, season 1 episodes “TKO” and “Grail” are also considered horrible episodes by most fans, but I actually like them better than most.nnIf you are enjoying even the worst episodes of the series, you’re going to love the really good stuff that starts in season 2. u00a0I can’t wait to hear your discussion on season 3′s “Passing Through Gethsemane.” u00a0:)

Hi. u00a0I just found your podcast and am listening to the 2nd episode now. u00a0I’m glad you’ve given the show a try. u00a0It’s always interesting to hear opinions of the show from the viewpoint of new viewers. u00a0I’ve been a huge Babylon 5 fan for over 15 years, and it’s my all-time favorite show, sci-fi or otherwise. u00a0The first season is a little rough, but it gradually gets much better. u00a0I’m rewatching season 3 along with the Tuning Into Sci-Fi TV Podcast (and switching back and forth to the 2nd season on my own), and several times I’ve forgotten how good some episodes were and sometimes like them even better this time around than the half-dozen times I’ve seen them before. u00a0I look forward to hearing your views on the rest of the series.

The relationship between Ivanova and her father is examined in detail in a later episode, which is extremely interesting because of it’s religious themes.nCan’t wait to hear your thoughts on that one…n

I’m thrilled to be listening your comments about Babylon 5. I watched all of it last year and loved it. I had no one to talk to about it. Thanks for your podcasts.

    U.S. Celebrates Independence Day

Independence Day honors the birthday of the United States of America and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. It’s a day of picnics and patriotic parades, a night of concerts and fireworks, and a reason to fly the American flag.

Oh, and a reason (like you really need one?) to listen to the latest episode of Catholic Weekend!
