I submitted an audio for this episode, but it was too late! 🙁 So I’ll have to post the manuscript instead.

It was awesome to get the reveal of the guy who was in the very first episode of Season Two. Neil. Emma’s lover, and Henry’s father. Aaand what the postcard was all about.

It was great to get some more backstory for Emma, and I’m so glad that Henry’s father’s reason for not being in Henry’s life was not the some old same old story. Actually this is a case where the father didn’t know he had a son. No, Neil seems to me that he would be a dad who’d want to be active in Henry’s life. Or I’d hope so. It will be interesting to see how this all unravels. What will Emma feel when she sees Neil again, and how will Henry relate to the father he has never known? Hopeful August will be on hand to explain why Neil has not been around.

I’ve got a question? What was in the box? It was a typewriter in season 1, but it seems to be something else in this episode? Don’t know? Thoughts? Whatever it was it opened Neil’s eyes to the truth, and even more he believed.

I laughed with delight when the giant turned out to be Jorge Garcia. I will always see him as Hurly. Sadly that was where my delight ended, unfortunately the CGI didn’t work so well in this episode, not as good as the orc a couple episodes back. And all his lines felt a little bit mediocre.

What was good about the beanstalk adventure was all this talk of trust. Trusting one another. The giant ended up trusting Emma, but she didn’t really trust anyone. Killian Jones wanted Emma to trust him, but Emma couldn’t bring herself to do so, she just wouldn’t let Killian Jones of the hook.

Lastly I wanted to bring up a scene at the bottom of the beanstalk. The one to do with the sleeping curse and the nightmares one is subjected to after waking up from the spell. Snow admits that she had nightmares for a while too under the sleeping curse, and I wonder if Snow had the same dream as Aurora. I ask this because right at the end Henry (whom also had been under the sleeping curse) wakes up, after having the same dream as the now awake beauty.

Henry’s and Aurora’s dreams were the same but for one element. Aurora said

“I looked over into the other corner and there was someone else there. I see it’s eyes. He was looking right at me.”

    And Henry says ”

I was in this cornor and I was looking out. And there was someone else there. She was staring at me through the flames.”

Aurora saw he and Henry saw a she. So my question is – were they in each others dreams looking at one another?

    Food for thought. Chow!

Just found your podcast and I have really enjoyed hearing everyone’s theories. I am a huge LOST fan and love seeing all the easter eggs in OUAT. The eggs are usually pretty small nut in this episode they were huge. The writers had to do this on purpose. Seson 3 – 16 from LOST was “The Man from Tallahassee”. in the episode it shows some of John Locke’s back story. It has so many similarities with this OUAT episode, but the main thing that caught my attention was the magic box! Here is what Ben told John in the episode “Benjamin Linus: Let me put it so you’ll understand. Picture a box. You know something about boxes, don’t you John? What if I told you that, somewhere on this island, there is a very large box and whatever you imagined, whatever you wanted to be in it when you opened that box, there it would be? What would you say about that, John?” Not a major deal but, I do think whats inside the box will be similar. I think the contents of the box with have to do with Neil/Bae’s father. I think Bae went searching for his mother and ended up in Neverland. Which would explain some of the age issues that come along with thinking Neil is Bae. I am more interested in the August character! I think he may be comparable to Desmond from LOST. There is something special about him. My wife thinks Pinocchio was carved from a magical tree just like the wardrobe. I’m not sure about that but I do think he has been to other realms. This episode was full of so many new stories! I can’t wait for the next episode. Love your podcast, keep up the good work.

I believe Neal could be the tinman. In his apartment, we see a drawing of a heart. (For more reasons as to why I think he’s from Oz, see my post on the first episode of this season.)

    Dear Father,

Been a regular Listerine of your Podcast since you guys started off last year. In fact I may have been one of the few exceptional cases who heard your Podcast first (came across it when I was following your Tintin podcast) and started watching the series afterwards, since it was not getting telecasted in India officially at that time. But now I eagerly wait for each episode of the TV series as well as your Podcast. A big hello to all the participants, you guys are doing a great job and cover each episode so comprehensively that I never felt the need to add anything more.

Watching this episode, the August & Neal sequence and the secret of What’s in the Box’ reminded me of the Tarantino’s movie Pulp Fiction, where the Marsellus’s briefcase was used, which was supposed to be carrying something extremely precious, but the content of it were never disclosed. It could be just a plot device, like so many other things writers put into the script just to keep the viewers scratching their heads and waiting eagerly for an explanation in the future episodes.

Its unfair to target August, based on his actions in this episode. He’s always been shown as a a mysterious character by the writers. His treated by the writer of the series has been mixed, initially he was being build as a critical factor in season one, but then reduced to being a wood in final episode, who had nothing to do when the curse was being broken. As if the writers have completely forgotten about him. While others remained as they were, Billy the mouse didn’t turn into a mouse when the curse ended, Jiminy is still in his human form, the Dwarfs also remained normal sized too. No one in the storybrooke has reverted back to the physical shape they were in Fairytale world, so why only August turned into a wood.

His complete absence in the first 6 episodes of this season is also a mystery. Is it just a sloppy work to be ignored or a deliberate ploy worth pondering upon. Maybe the writer use him as a plot device, to get out of the sticky situation, move forward in the story, without really bothering to develop him as a strong integral part of the main storyline which remains to be focused on Snow White & Family against all the sundry villains of every possible fairy tale.

Sometime I feel the storyline is moving towards the straightforward Disney style rather than the complicated Lost style.

Anyways, its is fun to watch the series and listen to your Podcast :-). Kudos to you, Deborah, Lisa, Shelly and David. keep up the good work. And a request to add Glen as regular co-host for the Poscast, his analysis is always brilliant.

    Regards,

    Bhuwan

when i first heard the podcast and got to the discussion about neal cassadys name and its meaning, my ear perked. my name is casidhe, actually pronounced cassidy, and is more closely gaelic in origin. the meaning is incredibly more literal. Ca- means “from” and Sidhe- means “faeries”. the name casidhe, or cassidy, in gaelic literally means born from faeries. though i doubt this has any real ties to neals fairytale identity, i felt the need to clear it up.
