    Priest in Space?

In this week’s episode of ‘Catholic Weekend’, Sarah Reinhard, Billy Newton, Lisa Hendey and Fr. Roderick talk about a surprising initiative by a young priest in the Netherlands: To boldly go where no priest has gone before.

Fr. Anton ten Klooster hopes to become the first priest in space. That is, if he gets picked out of the thousands of candidates that participate in the ‘Race for Space’ of the international newspaper ‘Metro’.

Candidates that gather the most votes heighten their chances of getting sent into space.

“If METRO is sending someone into space, why not a priest?” says Fr. Anton. “Priests already maintain regular contact with the heavens anyway,” he jokes.

You can vote for Fr. Anton (twitter.com/fatheranton) by following the link below and by clicking on the yellow button (‘STEM’).

The New iPad: iNeed or iWant?

Yesterday, Tim Cook presented the ‘new iPad’ to the world. A better screen, faster graphics, an improved camera and some new software. Is it worth upgrading if you already have an iPad? Is it an ‘iNeed’ or just an ‘iWant’? Or perhaps an ‘iDontCare’?

Fr. Roderick discusses the question on his newest episode of The Break. Click on the player to listen!

Having decided not to purchase the iPad 2 but to wait for the retina display, I instead bought an Android tablet last Summer to ‘hold me over’ until the iPad 3 release. In the meantime, I’ve discovered a mobile OS superior to Apple’s in every way but two:

First, iOS integrates exceptionally well with other Apple computers and devices. I mean, that’s their whole product strategy, right? They really nail it, though. The simplest example is sharing photos through AppleTV. Several people can sit on the sofa with their iPhones and ‘toss’ photos from their Album up onto the screen. It’s seamless, requires no configuration, and works every time. I’d love to have that kind of simplicity when giving presentations at work!

The second advantage Apple enjoys is the number of apps available. I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but they’re not even close. There are simply far more apps for iOS than for Android; it will remain that way for some time.

So, bottom line: I now face a dilemma. Do I go back to iOS and enjoy an increasingly Apple-saturated household? Or do I wait for the Android equivalent? Hmmmm…something to ponder, though I can’t treat myself to something like this until after Lent!

      Fr. Roderick:

I listened to your adventure with tofu – and chuckled. Tofu, after all, is itself revolting. But here is a recipe that adds tofu as a protein source, but the flavors come from the other things. It’s a favorite that my wife, Chris, found in an old cookbook entitled, “The Meatless Gourmet”. We like it served over pasta. Here it is:

      Tofu Cacciatore

Pile some noodles on your plate, then top them with this Italian1avoriteturned-
veggie. All you need is a salad and aslice ofItalian bread, and you’ve
      created a. gourmet feast.
      Makes 4 servings

      2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 cup onion, sliced vertically into thin slices
1 cup green bell pepper, cut into thin 2-inch strips
      1 cup sliced mushrooms
      4 doves garlic, crushed
      1 I-pound can salt-free (or·.gular) tomatoes, chopped,
      undrained ,/
1 8-ounce can salt-free (or regular) tomato sauce
      ½ cup water
      1 bay leaf
      1 teaspoon dritd oregano
      ½ teaspoon dried rosemary, crumbled
      1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 pound firm or medium tofu, cut into 1 x,2-inch rectangles,
¼ -inch thick, drained well between layers of towels
      Salt to taste

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add onion,
green pepper; mushrooms, and garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, until
vegetables are tender, about 8 minutes.
Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, water, and spices. Bring to a boil, stirring
occasionally. Add tofu, stirring very gently to keep tofu from
breaking apart. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer 20
      minutes, stirring occasionally.

      Remove and discard bay leaf.
      Add salt to taste.
      Serve over medium (yolk-free) noodles.

Serve-again hint: Hollow out a submarine roll and fill it with the
tofu mixture. Hot or cold, it’s a delicious sandwich.

      Each serving provides:
      199 Carbohydrate
      43 mg Sodium
      0 mg Cholesterol
      198 Calories
      14 g Protein

Is it required that the Holy Father watch TV in full papal clothing? I hope he took his shoes off after the photographer left.
