Registration is now open for the 2012 Catholic New Media Conference – a festive and educational event for anyone involved in Catholic media.

All interested in Catholic communication, new media, and social media are invited, including young adults (18+), ministry leaders, and priests and religious, to whom Pope Benedict appealed in his 2010 World Communications Day message, to “become an ever more pastoral presence on the web.”

If you are involved in Catholic media as a blogger, podcaster, writer, website developer, videographer, or work at the parish level maintaining your parish’s social media channels, this is THE event of the year for learning and networking with others.

The 5th annual Catholic New Media Conference will be held at the Arlington Convention Center (Arlington, TX) on August 29-31, 2012.  For the first time, the CNMC will be meeting in the same location as the Catholic Marketing Network trade show and the meeting of the Catholic Writers Guild.

• Jennifer Fulwiler is a writer and speaker from Austin, Texas. She’s a blogger for the National Catholic Register, a regular guest on various national radio networks, and her story has been featured on EWTN television. She has a degree in Advertising with a focus on New Media from the University of Texas, and has an award winning personal blog, ConversionDiary.com

• Elizabeth Scalia is a Benedictine oblate and managing editor of the Catholic Portal at Patheos.com, where she blogs as the Anchoress. She is also a weekly columnist at First Things, and a featured columnist at The Catholic Answer Magazine.  She is the author of Caring for the Dying with the Help of your Catholic Faith (Our Sunday Visitor), and was a contributor to Disorientation: How to Go to College Without Losing Your Mind (Ascension Press).

• Cliff Ravenscraft  is founder of the Generally Speaking Production Network (gspn.tv). Podcasting since 2005, Cliff has turned a hobby into his full time business. Among his many shows are Family From The Heart, and Pursuing a Balanced Life.

• Fr. Roderick Vonhögen co-founded the Star Quest Production Network (SQPN) with the mission of ‘Leading the Way in Catholic New Media’. He hosts and produces several audio, video and live streaming shows including The Break, Health and Holiness, Catholic Insider, The Secrets of Once Upon A Time, Secrets of the Hobbit, and more. Fr. Roderick is regularly sought by the international press, cable news and entertainment shows for his expertise in Catholic New Media and for his opinions on popular topics. He hosts a television show on Dutch national TV as well as a weekly radio show.  Fr. Roderick lives and works in Amersfoort, The Netherlands.

• Brandon Vogt, is a Catholic writer and speaker who blogs at The Thin Veil (http://www.thinveil.net). He’s also the author of The Church and New Media: Blogging Converts, Online Activists, and Bishops Who Tweet.

• Patrick Padley is a Kansas City-based new media creator, digital strategist, podcaster,musician, and online marketing thinker.  As a Social Media Consultant at Digital Evolution Group, a digital consultancy in Kansas City, Pat advises clients on their online initiatives and marketing strategy.

SQPN is very excited to announce a new partnership with New Zealand’s first Catholic podcast network.  The 15th Station Podcast Network is now an affiliate of SQPN!

They have a number of programs, including:

• The 15th Station: a monthly news podcast with a panel of Kiwi Catholics providing  a Catholic perspective on the news and current events of the month.
• Catechiwi:  a monthly catechesis podcast with  a guest theologian from around the country or the world to speak on an aspect of the Catholic Faith.
• Ignition:  a show that leverages their partnerships with organizations like Hearts Aflame, to provide a back catalogue of amazing lectures and talks from international speakers.

Registration for the 4th Annual Catholic New Media Conference is now open!

SQPN’s annual conference on new media will be held at the Savior Pastoral Center of the Archdiocese of Kansas City from September 30th to October 2nd, 2011.

SPECIAL GUESTS

Keynote speakers for the conference will be Sr. Anne Flanagan, FSP and Mr. Seàn Patrick Lovett.

SR.ANNE FLANAGAN – a native of New Orleans, has been a Daughter of St. Paul for over thirty years.  In print media, she is the author of “Come to Jesus! A Kids Book for Eucharistic Adoration” and a contributor to “I Will Remember You: My Catholic Guide through Grief” and to the Lectio Divina Series (Advent Grace, Lenten Grace, Easter Grace, Ordinary Grace), all from Pauline Books & Media.  Active in new media since her Vatican days, Twitter’s Nunblogger maintains five blogs and three Ustream channels for her community’s apostolate. She is on the new media advisory board and the apps creation committee for Pauline Books & Media and is a guest blogger for the religion feature of the Chicago Tribune.

SEÀN PATRICK LOVETT – Director of Vatican Radio’s FM Channel One-O-Five Live and the station’s English and Italian Language Sections since 2001, describes himself as “Irish by blood, African by birth and Italian by adoption.”  A man of many credentials, Mr. Lovett began working at Vatican Radio under Pope Paul VI in 1977. He followed John Paul II on many of his international pilgrimages for 26 years, founded Vatican Radio’s plurilinguistic, multimedial, interactive radio channel, Jubileum, during the Jubilee Year 2000, and is a Professor of Social Communications at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (courses in radio, television, and personal expressive techniques).

PROGRAM

In addition to the keynote presentations by Sr. Flanagan and Mr. Lovett, the CNMC program will include two breakout tracks.

Social Media Spirituality – This track, presented by Lisa Hendey (CatholicMom.com and author of A Book of Saints for Catholic Moms and The Handbook for Catholic Moms); and Pat Gohn (AmongWomenPodcast.com and columnist for Patheos, Catholic Exchange and others), will focus on the spiritual formation of Catholic communicators in the online world and the tools and resources that are available to assist them.

Blogging & Social Media Techniques – This track will delve into the specifics of modernizing parish and organizational websites and the best ways to function in the world of social media. Mr. Matthew Warner (Founder of flockNote.com) will be one of the presenters for this track.

CATHOLIC MEDIA GUILD WORKSHOPS

As a new feature of the conference, the SQPN Catholic Media Guild will organize an extra day of formation and training for anyone involved in Catholic media.  This will take place at the Savior Pastoral Center on Friday, September 30th, the day before the CNMC.

A hands-on set of workshops, these sessions will help you learn how to use the latest technology and the most recent developments in new media to reach out to the world. From the iPad to the Android, from iPhone to social networks and blogs: we teach you how to publish your creative content and to engage your audience.

These workshops are geared toward priests, deacon, religious and any individuals and parish workers who are interested in hands-on learning about social media and how it can be best used in their parish/school activities,  organizations, etc.

The CNMC will be held at the Savior Pastoral Center, a former seminary complex in Kansas City, Kansas.  The Pastoral Center is a retreat and conference center operated by the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas.    Located on a 100 acre campus west of downtown Kansas City, its address is: 12601 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas, 66109.

The season of Lent will begin in a few short days and around the world Catholics will begin making special personal observances of this prayerful season.

Some people will fast from a favorite food or activity as a way of reminding themselves of Lent. Others will start something new, such as spiritual reading, attending daily Mass, or adding additional exercise to their normal routines and thus make positive changes to their lifestyles. In the United States and other parts of the world, Catholics are required to fast from eating meat on Fridays during Lent.

However, it is not uncommon to occasionally forget what we have committed to do during Lent, or perhaps that another Friday has come around again. Luckily, some enterprising young adults in the Diocese of Tulsa in Oklahoma have come up with a way to help you remember.

LivingLent.org is a new website dedicated to help you have a more spiritually rewarding season of Lent. The website lets you post your Lenten pledges online and will send you daily reminders via email or SMS so that you do not forget. It will even remind you of feast days and Fridays.
