Chris podcasting live from Toronto this week, the cu crew talks about the back to school rush (or lack thereof) and some ways you might remain Catholic while heading there. We offer up our picks of the week for your perusal. the cu metro rolls on: begging a right says the Vatican, unfortunate events in Beijing, and the papal prayer intentions for August. Backchat heads to its vacation spot one more week, and Fr. Ryan talks about his one great Canadian love…if you wait for it.

It’s back to school time and we’re talking about the education of Children.

Pope John Paul II: 2004 SYMPOSIUM ON CATHOLIC EDUCATION: “To give youth a future, it is important that education be understood as a search for the integral and harmonious development of the person, as the maturation of the moral conscience to discern good and act accordingly, and as attention to the spiritual dimension of young people as they develop.”

Pope John Paul II: 2004 SYMPOSIUM ON CATHOLIC EDUCATION: “True education must start from the truth about man, the affirmation of his dignity and transcendent vocation. Looking at every young person in this anthropological perspective means seeking to help him develop the best of himself so that in exercising all his skills he may carry out whatever God calls him to do.”

Romans 12:2: “I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing. So you, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And what you heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will have the ability to teach others as well.”

2 Timothy 2:1-2: “So you, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And what you heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will have the ability to teach others as well.”

12/20/2007 – 10:41 EST
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEDIA ADVISORY

CONYERS, GA – In celebration of the remaining days of Advent, the Star Quest Production Network (SQPN.com) – the Internet’s most popular portal for Catholic podcasts – will be adding five new shows to their line-up of popular Catholic programming.

“We are rounding out our annual giving campaign that makes it possible for us to provide so many free and exciting Catholic programs on the Internet,” says Greg Willits, Chief Operations Officer of SQPN. “And as our way of thanking our listeners for their generosity, we felt this was a perfect time to start adding new shows, one a day, leading up to Christmas. It’s five days of Christmas presents for the Catholic podcast listening audience.”

Podcasts, which are similar to radio shows, are free, downloadable audio and video files that can be listened to or viewed on computers or portable media devices such as MP3 players, CD players, and iPods. This past year SQPN broke new ground with video productions such That Catholic Show, a popular new video series co-produced with Rosary Army (www.RosaryArmy.com).

“2008 will continue to bring new programs to SQPN, including new video podcasts and a new season of That Catholic Show,” says Fr. Roderick Vonhögen, founder of SQPN. “But we couldn’t wait until the new year to launch these new affiliate podcasts, so we’re announcing the first of five new programs today.”

The first new show being added to SQPN is Catholic Underground, hosted by Fr. Chris Decker (a priest for the Diocese of Baton Rouge), Fr. Ryan Humphries (a priest for the Diocese of Alexandria, Louisiana), and Joshua LeBlanc (co-founder and president of cyberCatholics.com).

Following the success of several podcasts aimed at presenting weekly technology news and podcasts covering life in the Catholic sphere, the members of catholicunderground.com have created a podcast that speaks to both Vatican II and Pope John Paul the Great's call for those in media to responsibly and courageously bring technology to the transmission of the Gospel.

“At catholicunderground.com, we're amazed at how God is bringing about the new springtime of the Church through the use of technology,” says Fr. Decker. “SQPN has been a great resource for those who are discovering the Catholic faith or are re-discovering it after some time away. We're proud to be part of that continuing mission and honored to join the SQPN extended family.”

Information and links to subscribe to Catholic Underground can be found at www.CatholicUnderground.com and www.sqpn.com.

CatholiCon 2008

We’ve received lots of excellent feedback from many of our listeners. We’re currently collaborating with other podcasters such as Greg and Jennifer Willits of Rosary Army and Fr. Roderick Vonhogen of the Catholic Insider.

If you’d like to provide us with your ideas and suggestions for CatholicCon, check out Sean McGaughey’s Facebook group Catholic New Media Conference.

Elizabeth Lev (via Zenit) tell us the Five Worst Looks for Christians:

Cardinal Socks
Virgin Mary Belt Buckles
The Rosary Necklace
Crucifixes (or should that be Crucifixi), chaplets, and scapulars as accessories.
Satanic Imagery

Much ado about Skype — Skype was down for 36 hours. What happens if we can’t use Skype? Here are the alternatives:

the gizmo project
GoogleTalk
ISDN
Plain Old Telephone Service – it’s what us geeks call POTS lines.

It was our one year anniversary on the 20th of August and besides still being friends, we actually have more listeners than we started. We’re thanking all of you for your support by giving one lucky listener a $15 iTunes gift card. Send in your backchat to backchat@catholicunderground.com (only once please) and you’ll be entered to win. We’ll draw the lucky winner from Fr. Chris biretta (again not the TV show, the car, or the firearm.) The Winner will be announced on September 3.

This week’s music

Celtic Stone – Rocky Road to Brenham
