“This calls for wisdom: let him who has understanding reckon the number of the beast, for it is a human number, its number is six hundred and sixty-six” (Rev. 13:18).

Countless individuals, both past and future, have been proposed as the true identity of the Beast, but what does the evidence from the Bible say?

In this video, I try to take a calm, balanced look at the evidence from the perspective of the original Christians reading the book of Revelation in the first century and suggest that the evidence points to an individual that many will find very surprising, especially if they view the book of Revelation as applying almost exclusively to the future.

Contrary to myth, Christianity’s concept of marriage has not been set in stone since the days of Christ, but has constantly evolved as a concept and ritual.

Prof. John Boswell, the late Chairman of Yale University’s history department, discovered that in addition to heterosexual marriage ceremonies in ancient Christian church liturgical documents, there were also ceremonies called the “Office of Same-Sex Union” (10th and 11th century), and the “Order for Uniting Two Men” (11th and 12th century).

He demonstrates that the article is derived from a deliberately falsified piece of scholarship by deceased professor John Boswell, who used outrageously false mistranslations to twist ancient documents to fit a modern agenda.

Many people are cutting out some or all animal products from their diet. When done for health reasons, this is a matter of science rather than faith. But what about claims that Christians should be vegetarians for religious reasons?

We’re now in May–a month associated with the Virgin Mary–so here’s a new video on one of the most common objections to the rosary: the charge that it amounts to “vain repetitions,” in violation of Jesus’ command in the Sermon on the Mount:

“But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking” (Matt. 6:7, King James Version).

“Surely, the rosary must violate that,” an opponent of the rosary thinks. “I mean, 153 Hail Marys? That’s gotta violate Jesus’ command against repetitive prayer.”

But is that what Jesus really meant? Is it even what he really *said*? Or has there been a translation problem here?

In this video episode from the Jimmy Akin Podcast, I go into the surprising background of this verse and why–even if you grant the critic his translation–it doesn’t mean what he thinks it means.

This week the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome mandated a thoroughgoing reform of the largest leadership conference for women religious in the United States.

In an exclusive interview, Ann Carey joins Jimmy Akin to go in-depth on this dramatic announcement, why it happened, what it means, and what may happen next.

Ann Carey is a journalist who has been covering the subject of women religious for many years. She is the author of the book Sisters in Crisis: The Tragic Unraveling of Women’s Religious Communities.

According to the Vatican report, there are serious doctrinal problems associated with the activities and publications of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious–some which challenge the core of the Christian faith itself.

The leadership of the LCWR has also flouted the authority of the bishops, as when they publicly sought to neutralize the U.S. bishops’ leadership during the 2010 health care debate in Congress and when they later honored Sr. Carol Keehan, CEO of the Catholic Healthcare Association, which also broke with and defied the bishops over the issue of health care.

Seven years ago, on April 19,  white smoke announced the election of a new Pope. Fr. Roderick was on location, podcasting live from St. Peter’s Square. Hear the excitement of the crowds when the doors of the balcony open and when Pope Benedict XVI addresses the world for the first time!

It was a long day. And an enjoyable one. The SQPN Podcast Marathon began with Catholic Weekend and Fr. Roderick hosting Capt. Jeff, Maria, Steve, Greg Willits and Jimmy Akin. This was followed by the prayerful Pat Gohn who led us all in the rosary and the Divine Mercy prayer. She also offered several incentives for donations.

Then we were among men. Specifically Capt. Jeff and Jimmy Akin. Jimmy fielded tough Catholic questions with ease.

After the guys came David, Allyson and their brood — of chickens. The Sweeneys auctioned off the right to name their birds. Capt. Jeff graciously made a bid in honor of Denyse and me!

By 3:00 Fr. Roderick was back, this time hosting David Handlos and Shelly Kelly for Secrets of Once Upon a Time. Love the show. Love the podcast.

Then we were ushered into the Catholic Lab where Ian Maxfield gave us lessons (and quizzes) in history and science. Seeing him answered the nagging question, does Ian wear a Catholic lab coat? The answer is no.

Next came an informal hour in which Fr. Roderick, Sean McCarney and Inge dissed other countries’ food and drink. If you value your life don’t offer to share your fries with Sean, your beans with Father or your coffee with Inge.

If you were to ask what the highlight of the marathon was I guess I’d have to say Fr. Roderick’s “horror smoothie” segment.

What were the ingredients?

• apple juice
• Tabasco sauce
• condensed milk
• hazel nut paste
• raw, chopped onion
• whipped cream
• raw mushrooms
• spicy French mustard

The combination looked lethal.

Judging by Father’s discomfort after downing the contents of his glass it wasn’t far from poison. In the chat room we were actually urging him to not drink the entire glass. But he was determined to give the bidders their money’s worth.

After Father (who ducked out in a hurry) came Secrets of Harry Potter with Jim, Lyn, Ariadnaand Denise,

The marathon ended the way it began, with Catholic Weekend. But this time Capt. Jeff was back in the pilot’s seat. The show was fun and informal, and a great way to go out.

In the end the marathon earned $8000 and the Giving Campaign earned over $100,000. I know this is short of the original $140,000 goal but I was proud of the way our chat room came through today.

Catholic Podcasters Join Forces in Divine Mercy Podcast Marathon for
New Media Evangelization

On Saturday, April 14 2012, Catholic podcasters from all over the world will join forces in a 12 hour long podcast marathon to raise money for SQPN’s New Media evangelization efforts.

The podcast Marathon will begin on Saturday, April 14 at 10 am EST and will end on the eve of Divine Mercy Sunday at 10 pm EST. In addition to streaming video and audio, viewers will be able to chat and interact with the podcasters via a live chatroom.

Fun and Festive

“Every year, we end our giving campaign in a fun and festive way with a podcast marathon,” says Fr. Roderick Vonhogen, CEO of SQPN. “We are still about $7000 short of the amount we raised last year. Hopefully, people will help us to meet our goal so we can continue to evangelize with new media. As a non profit organization, we completely rely on donations from our listeners.”

SQPN was founded to answer blessed John Paul II’s appeal to Catholics to use new media and the internet for the new evangelization. With over a quarter of a million downloads each month, the organization has been able to reach tens of thousands of mostly young people all over the world.

This year, Fr. Roderick hopes not only to continue the existing initiatives, but also to substantially expand SQPN’s reach by building a new studio and by hiring extra people to help with the production of new programs.

“However, to expand our work and build a new production studio, we would need an additional $40,000,” says Fr. Roderick. “It seems impossible, but we trust in God’s providence. If it’s His plan, He will somehow make it all work.”

Fr. Anton ten Klooster hopes to become the first priest in space. That is, if he gets picked out of the thousands of candidates that participate in the ‘Race for Space’ of the international newspaper ‘Metro’.

Candidates that gather the most votes heighten their chances of getting sent into space.

“If METRO is sending someone into space, why not a priest?” says Fr. Anton. “Priests already maintain regular contact with the heavens anyway,” he jokes.

SQPN is very excited to announce a new partnership with New Zealand’s first Catholic podcast network.  The 15th Station Podcast Network is now an affiliate of SQPN!

They have a number of programs, including:

• The 15th Station: a monthly news podcast with a panel of Kiwi Catholics providing  a Catholic perspective on the news and current events of the month.
• Catechiwi:  a monthly catechesis podcast with  a guest theologian from around the country or the world to speak on an aspect of the Catholic Faith.

This month is Oscar Month, and the member of the SQPN Movie Panel will watch or rewatch the blockbuster ‘Titanic’ as the first movie of the month.

Each month will have its own theme (‘Shark Month’, ‘Disaster Month’, ‘Spy Month’, ‘Magical Month’), and Februari is ‘Oscar Month’. We will watch the four movies that won the most Academy Awards in history: Titanic, Ben Hur, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and West Side Story.

Enchanted – Part 1

I woke up to a number of faux-concerned Tweets about hearing Sonny and Cher’s I Got You, Babe. Thanks, Bill Murray, for this iconic film, but I could really care less about the little rodent…and his Southern counterpart, General Beauregard Lee. I just usually send the weather dog outside in the morning. If she comes back wet, it’s raining. If she won’t go out, it’s cold. I’m good with that.

But I do love the film. It’s funny, in that way that Bill Murray could issue a death sentence and it would sound funny. Maybe it’s the smirk. Delivery is everything in comedy, no?

Naturally there’s more to it than that. Murray’s character is a giant ball of ego. His arrogance is beyond off-putting; it clearly has made him a miserable person, disliked by his colleagues, and cause for his punishment to live groundhog day over and over again.

However, according to Maria, “this punishment is really no punishment at all…” Click here to read why!
