Talion (SG1)

SSG254: When a Jaffa summit is bombed and Bra’tac is left for dead, Teal’c abandons the SGC — and any pretense of due process — to hunt down Arkad, a Jaffa warlord and follower of Origin who may have killed his mother. Jeff HaeckerLisa Jones, and Victor Lams take on “Talion,” season 10, episode 17 of Stargate SG-1, and find themselves divided.

Lisa couldn’t make it through the episode in one sitting. The violence — culminating in a graphic sword fight — felt excessive and out of character for a show that had spent ten seasons developing Teal’c into something more than a weapon. Victor draws a sharp comparison: the episode lands like a “Quentin Tarantino guest director” card flashing up after last week’s comedic “Bad Guys” — a tonal 180 the panel struggles to reconcile.

The discussion turns to Arkad as a villain: imposing, well-performed by Craig Fairbrass, but introduced with so much compressed backstory that he barely has room to breathe before he’s dead. The revelation that Arkad killed Teal’c’s mother — never mentioned in ten prior seasons — gets dropped alongside a Naquadah stockpile, a planned attack on Earth, and an IOA subplot the team questions the need for. It’s a lot to absorb.

There’s still craft to acknowledge. The night shoot that opens the episode is rare for the series. Director Andy Mikita uses multiple film stocks to give certain sequences a raw visual texture, and James “Bam Bam” Bamford — brought in from Atlantis — gives the fight choreography a harder edge than usual. The quiet scene where SG-1 watches Teal’c walk away, Vala suggesting maybe they should have gone with him, earns its weight.

Bra’tac makes his final appearance in the Stargate universe. His farewell scene with Teal’c — calling him the son he never had — is genuinely moving. But the panel questions whether this episode was the right stage for that goodbye. He deserved more than a hospital bed.

The episode closes with unanswered threads: What becomes of Arkad’s army? Where does the Jaffa Nation go from here? And will the upcoming Amazon Stargate series give longtime fans any kind of resolution? Jeff, Lisa, and Victor consider what a new show owes its audience — and what they’re hoping to see.
