The Secrets of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

SCR191: Bowser came closer to redemption than anyone expected — and then his son showed up.
Patrick Mason is joined by Jeff Haecker, Rob Leonardi, and Thomas Salerno to break down The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Illumination’s follow-up to the 2023 hit, and what emerges is a film with more emotional weight than anticipated. The panel zeroes in on Bowser‘s arc as its most surprising element: a villain who genuinely attempts reform, agrees to serve time for his crimes, and then collapses back into villainy the moment Bowser Jr. reappears. They call it the reverse Darth Vader — a father pulled back to evil, not from it. It hits harder than a Mario movie has any right to.
Family is the film’s spine. Peach finally finds the sister she never knew in Rosalina, whose origin in the games is deliberately darker than anything here. The panel debates whether making Rosalina Peach’s older sister is a fair departure from the lore — consensus lands on effective for the film, even if purists may bristle — and how that relationship contrasts with Bowser Jr.’s version of family loyalty: a kid who absorbed everything wrong from his father without ever realizing it.
Yoshi was the first movie’s most notable absence and this one’s most enthusiastic addition. His New York City rampage, the Jurassic Park musical cue in the pyramid sequence, and a visual reference to The Land Before Time‘s Sharptooth scene are all flagged — and the panel agrees his arrival was worth the wait.
Fox McCloud shows up as the roguish pilot the group needs, bringing clear Han Solo energy. The anime-style flashback sequence earns particular praise as the template for what a full Star Fox film should look like. The cameo landscape beyond that is dense: Mario 2 characters including Wart and Birdo, Pikmin, Mr. Game and Watch, ROB the Robot, Kamek, and a map rebuild sequence that evokes Super Mario World‘s overworld.
The film runs under 90 minutes and never slows down. The panel’s verdict: better than the first.
They close with sequel speculation — Wario and Waluigi, a Luigi’s Mansion installment, Kirby, and a Smash Bros. tournament as the franchise’s eventual Avengers moment.
