Vengeance (SGA)

SSG259: The Atlantis team investigates an abandoned Taranian settlement and walks into something far worse than an empty planet. Underground, they find a room full of bodies, hybrid creatures built from Iratus bug DNA, and Michael — the Wraith they remade and then abandoned — calmly explaining that this lab is one of many.
Lisa Jones, Jeff Haecker, and Victor Lams discuss “Vengeance,” Season 3’s penultimate episode and one of the show’s strongest horror outings. The creature-feature structure is deliberately paced: the creature stays in shadow for most of the episode, glimpsed in pieces, never fully revealed until the final act. Masters FX built two suits in under three weeks, filming in the tunnels of Vancouver’s Riverview Sanitarium under director Andy Mikita. One performer collapsed from exhaustion by the end of the night shoot.
But the episode’s real tension is moral, not physical. Ronon Dex has argued since “Michael” that the man should have been killed. Every episode since has made that harder to dismiss. Here, it becomes nearly impossible. Teyla Emmagan’sfractured Wraith-sense adds a quiet layer of unease: she felt a presence underground but couldn’t identify it as Wraith. She should know him by now.
The panel notes the Taranian detail: these aren’t background extras. They’re characters from Season 2’s “Inferno,” resettled with Atlantis’s help, left unnamed in this episode to keep the horror from getting too specific. Dr. Weir’s closing admission — that the expedition exposed the Taranians to the Wraith during their alliance — is the gut punch that sticks.
When the Daedalus arrives to destroy the planet, Michael is already gone. His creatures are on at least three other worlds. The threat has no fixed address.
