Maul – Shadow Lord, Chapter 7: Call to Oblivion
Podcast: Download
SSW261: Maul has never looked this cornered. In Chapter 7, “Call to Oblivion,” the Empire’s occupation of Janix tightens into a curfew-locked siege, and the former Sith Lord finds himself hunted through tunnels and dripping caves with his mechanical leg failing beneath him. For a character almost always written as untouchable, watching Maul struggle — and lose a Nightbrother who dies buying him seconds — reframes the whole stakes of the season.
Host Thomas Salerno is joined by Kathryn Laffrey and Jeff Haecker to work through an episode that runs on constant urgency. At its center is Devon Izara, the Jedi Padawan caught between escaping with young Rylee Lawson and standing beside the very Sith trying to recruit her. The panel digs into whether her choices are choices at all, or a string of no-win scenarios — and lands on a sharp idea: that temptation often looks less like choosing evil than settling for a lesser good.
Maul drops the episode’s biggest hook when he tells Devon that being cast aside by his old master was “not the deepest wound.” Was it losing half his body to Obi-Wan? The murder of his brother Savage Opress by Sidious himself? The hosts chase the thread without forcing an answer.
There’s plenty more to chew on: Rook Kast and the limits of Mandalorian loyalty when the credits stop flowing; Master Eeko-Dio Daki (voiced by Dennis Haysbert) offering steady Jedi wisdom one moment and fumbling it the next; and a scene-stealing turn from the police droid Two-Boots, whose unfaded paint and quiet defiance say more than any line of dialogue. The conversation also celebrates the show’s craft — digitized matte-painting backgrounds, a slowed Imperial March cue, and flame-edged lightsabers with reflective lighting that lands in the characters’ eyes.
By the time Marrok and the Eleventh Brother corner Maul and he answers the Emperor’s death sentence with a single word — “Likewise” — before bringing the ceiling down, you’ll understand why this trio keeps calling Maul – Shadow Lord the most consistently good Star Wars show in years.
