SSG263: Atlantis is dead in space. After the Asuran attack in the Season 3 finale, the city drops out of hyperspace with its power draining fast, drifting straight toward an asteroid field — and its leader is dying in the infirmary. Stargate Atlantis Season 4 opens with “Adrift,” and the clock never stops ticking.

Lisa Jones, Jeff Haecker, and Victor Lams work through the Season 4 premiere (S4E1), a true solving-problem episode that moves from one crisis to the next. With the city’s relays damaged and the shield collapsing, Rodney McKay burns through one fix after another while Dr. Keller — still new to Atlantis — fights to keep Dr. Weir alive after a catastrophic brain injury. When conventional medicine runs out, the only option left is the most dangerous one: reprogramming the Replicator nanites already dormant in Weir’s body.

The panel digs into the episode’s biggest off-screen story too: Torri Higginson’s exit as Weir and the arrival of Amanda Tapping’s Samantha Carter, moved over from the just-ended SG-1. They talk through how the show handled the transition, why a sci-fi series struggled to keep multiple strong female leads, and what it meant for the future of Atlantis.

Then there’s the spectacle. “Adrift” earned an Emmy nomination for its visual effects, and the conversation covers the standout sequences: a fleet of Puddle Jumpers clearing a path through the asteroid field — a set piece the writers openly modeled on the old Atari game Asteroids — plus a tense spacewalk to the hyperdrive and the show’s first fully 3D-rendered explosions. The team also gets into the small touches, from the deliberately low-tech red-and-green power gauge to the reused footage and the on-set brain-surgery consultant.

By the end, the city is saved but the danger isn’t over, and the episode sets up a desperate plan: a raid on the Asuran homeworld. Lisa Jones, Jeff Haecker, and Victor Lams also read listener feedback on the SG-1 finale “Unending” before closing out.
