SSW263: Maul finally has a way off Janix — but it comes wrapped in a murder. In Chapter 9 of Maul: Shadow Lord, “Strange Allies,” the former Sith Lord strikes a bargain with Dryden Vos and Crimson Dawn: a ship in exchange for taking out Vos’s superior. It’s the moment the series pays off its Solo connection eight years later, and it launches the survivors on a brutal run through the toxic underlevels of an Imperial-locked world.

Jeff Haecker, Kathryn Laffrey, and Jon Koral get into the chapter’s relentless pace, its horror-movie dread, and the slow-burn pull at its center: Maul’s campaign to turn the Jedi padawan Devon Izara into his apprentice. They talk through how the Force-bond between them works — why sending visions in modern Star Wars canon requires a real connection, echoing Maul and Ezra and later Kylo Ren and Rey — and why Devon holding the skiff for Maul leaves her teetering on the edge.

The discussion digs into the “allies of convenience” chess match: Maul letting Jedi Master Eeko-Dio-Daki cross the river first because he knows Devon won’t leave him behind; Rylee Lawson keeping his blaster set to stun while bodies pile up around him; and the father-son thread between Rylee and detective Brander Lawson. The panel also has fun with the chapter’s river-crossing puzzles — wolf, goat, and cabbage; the scorpion and the turtle — and the statue that nods to Delacroix.

Then there’s the cost. Maul’s forces are gutted — Spybot, Scorn, Rook Kast‘s scout, the Mandalorians — while Marrokthe Inquisitor closes in, tracking by something close to scent, and the chapter confirms who’s really commanding the Inquisitors. It all builds to a fog-shrouded final shot and a sound every Star Wars fan knows in their bones.

This is everything connected to that galaxy far, far away — the deeper themes of redemption, motivation, and choice running underneath all the action of Maul: Shadow Lord episode 9.
